So Boots PM +3 was done on his right paw today, and the result I got was 557. But that seemed strange to me, so I tested his other paw and got 289. Anyone ever experience that? It isn't the first time it has happened either. Different paws give me different numbers.
I've never come across this and can't see why the blood in one paw would be different to the blood in the other paw.... confused_cat
What happens if you re-test the same paw...???
Can you check that your meter and strips are working correctly? Does it come with test solution? Or could you try a test or two on yourself..?
Only other thing I can think of is possible contamination of the blood sample because of the something the kitty has on his paw...?
There may be nothing at all wrong with your kitty. It could just be meter or strip error or, as I said earlier, some contamination on the kitty's paw (or your own hands).
I have just looked online for info on this (only turned up info on people, not cats... ;-) ) and found quite a few diabetics on forums who have reported different readings on different hands or fingers; although the variations generally seem fairly minor (nothing like the discrepancy you've seen with your cat). And one person said they'd asked their doctor about the situation and the doctor had no idea why the blood sugar should vary from finger to finger or hand to hand.
Some people also spoke about the fact that readings on separate hands can be different simply because of the time it takes for the fresh blood to circulate through the body. (And thinking about that now, this could possibly support BJ's suggestion that impaired circulation could account for a substantial difference...? (Does your kitty seem to have any problem with his leg...?))
Try not to worry, Jade. But maybe it's worth trying out a few meter experiments, and being uber scrupulous with cleaning the kitty's paws prior to testing; just to rule out these causes.
