So Oscar finally started gaining weight after switching to Lantus a few months ago. The problem is I can't get him to stop! I've cut down the feeding from 9 cans of FF a day, to 8 cans, to now 7 cans for 3 cats. Yoda and my civie Daisy are loosing like an ounce or two a week - nothing drastic really. But Oscar is holding absolutely steady. He doesn't eat any more than the others really. On top of that - he looks a little "plump" on the front half, but still tiny in the rear. I don't know if this is something to be worried about, or just call him a fat plumpy with a "no-ass" syndrome due to neuropathy! (and yes, he is getting 3mg of Methyl B-12 a day :-D ) I've included pics and his weight pattern below.

7/14: 10lbs 12oz (started lantus the week before)
7/24: 11lbs 4.5oz
8/7: 11lbs 15.5oz
8/15: 12lbs 1oz
8/24: 12lbs 5oz
9/1: 12lbs 10oz
9/11: 12lbs 7.5oz
10/1: 12lbs 15.5oz (started feeding 8 cans a day)
10/15: 12lbs 14oz
10/27: 13lbs 1oz (started feeding only 7 cans a day)
11/2: 13lbs 3.5oz
11/6: 13lbs 3.5oz

I am getting this feeling that Mimi's weak hind legs are not as meaty as before.
which manufacturer do you get for B-12? I was at Target the other day but non of these B-12 indicated as "Methyl" or anything.

I have searched many places - online and at the plethora of health food stores available to me in this hippie town (lol). The best bang for your buck which doesn't include any chemicals that will harm your kitty is Xobaline. It comes in 3mg tablets and you can go to applehealthfood.com and use the "buy 2 get 1 free" option.

My shipment from Apple Health Food store just came in last week without a hitch.

Is everything else as it should be? That is an odd shape. I'd be tempted to get him checked out by the vet, just in case.

About the gaining weight and won't stop, Megan is that way. Once she starts gaining weight, I have to cut her food *way* down to reverse the trend. Then after a while she can go back to a more normal (for her) amount of food without putting on undesired weight. Her vet says her metabolism is just very, very low - shows in her heart rate, for instance - but she is obviously getting the nutrition she needs. My other two cats can eat a lot more without gaining.

His numbers are really hard to control. Not your regular bouncing all the time, and then BAM! He responds to his dose all of a sudden (see these last few days). He also occasionally has that bleh look - but that really isn't much different from the past few months. Some nights he is very bright eyed and very active though.

Merlyn, as he aged, got scrawny in his back end...renal disease probably helped along the muscle wasting.. so he looked a bit like that..big tummy scrawny butt.

if i am i seeing it right..he looks bigger on the right side. could he possible have a large lump god forbid.

Have you had a feel around? Does he mind if you touch him around his mid region? He does look a bit 'bent out of shape'. My cat is looking a bit the same with the scrawny butt, especially as he's eaten a lot of his fur off his hind legs. He's so tall that he looks like a different species - like a dog from behind. How old is Oscar? I picked a cat up yesterday and realised how different they feel when they are younger. Firm butt etc. Same with my husband!! :-D

I have poked and prodded his tummy and he doesn't care. I don't feel any large lumps in there. He does tend to look a little bigger on the right side, but only by a little. But then again, my dog is a little larger on his left side, and it is just normal for him. Oscar is about 7 years old. I found him when he was just barely still a kitten.

I've sent an email with pictures to my vet. I know they are closed on Wednesdays, but we'll see what they think......

well actually my tom is like that in a way too. but he's very shoulder muscular and barrel chested (to hold his big heart  ) so he is def. bigger than narrows to his hips. that's why i always say he's built like a linebacker.
