It's been 14 days today since giving Wease insulin.

Thanks to everyone here Wease is doing much better and I would have never figured anything out if it wasn't for these forums.
I actually think my cat would have died or cost me thousands of $$$ if I listened to my vet's advice of 2 units twice a day without home testing!!

His last 14 days numbers can be seen on his spreadsheet.

I really appreciate all the help, I guess I got lucky with Wease, I wish you all the best and that all your kitties live long happy life's!!

Seven more days till Wease is OTJ!!!

Could it get bad again between now and then? Im actually surprised how fast he got better.

Re: Wease's OTJ trial. Updated daily.

Sometimes they'll need to go back to a drop or so to get them regulated again but not always. He healed himself up pretty well and quickly though so certainly wishing the best for you!

Re: Wease's OTJ trial. Updated daily.

Wease has 5 toes on each foot. I always called him a watermelon on stick legs lol. Poor kitty. He couldn't be loved more tho I know that for sure.

Re: Wease's OTJ trial. Updated daily.

I couldn't think of nicer words to hear.

I know when you first came on here you were wondering if you were a "wuss" or not for caring so deeply about your cat. I think it takes a way better man to care for his best friend they way you have than to just put on some macho show and either not care or pretend to not care.

Congratulations on your success with wease. If love has anything to do with his speedy recovery, then its no wonder he has done so well.

Re: Wease's OTJ trial. Updated daily.

well said TY and i agree! i remember when i didnt used to know a single male who evn TOLERATED cats, let alone LOVE?? i dnt know many now. grew up with a male who abused them and i think he still does. horrible/hurtful/sick stuff. the love is a very admirable quality, and shows great strength. that love for any1 or any creature in general. very powerful.
plz dont evr be ashamed of ur love :) whether for a person, dog, cat, rat, or bug :D feeling it and showing it make u a great person! <3
WTG weasey and jason!

I went from testing once a day to twice a week to once a week. I'll eventually try every two weeks, then three weeks and finally monthly. Dusty likes the weekly testing "session" so I'm in no hurry to cut back  .

dancing_cat Oh and Congrats!!! dancing_cat

Re: Wease's OTJ trial. Updated daily.

Oh Stinkin' Cute Baby - already OTJ??? WOW!

YARD DANCE JASON! That's a dance that's too BIG to do inside without destroying the house!!! WOOT WOOT!!!

Thanks everyone :) Did everyone see the video in my signature showing Wease playing with an RC truck? lol

Oh and I posted more pics at the top :)

Yeah Wease! You're officially OTJ now. Time to party!

TWS (testing withdrawal syndrome) will now set in for Jason. ;-) It can be difficult to let go of testing so much, and it takes time to wean yourself off.

After almost 1 year OTJ, I still test Wink about once a week. I'd rather catch any rise in the BG as quickly as possible and get him back on insulin if needed. Plus, the test strips only last so long once they are opened, so I need to use them up. I even test both my civies about once a month, just to see how they are doing.

Here are some tips to stay OTJ (off-the-juice, insulin being the juice)

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly. Some people only do checks every 2 weeks to a month.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If your cat does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.

nice photos! reminds me when i could afford the hobby. r u a photographer? or just love it, like i do?
where do u think ur goin? have good lives? u cant leave us, just bc things r going well now. ;) :P

Wease made it! :)

Hopefully it stays good for 40 more years to come! love this furface!

He does seem to have a lot more (sleep) build up in his left eye. It also looks red and irritated. Not sure what is going on there.

Hey Jason!! Just had to stop in and say Congratulations to both Wease and you!!

I have been incredibly busy since your first several days here, but have been watching along when I could, and you've just done an amazing job with him, and it's so obvious that he's the love of your life.

That video is truly hilarious! Seems like it's somehow not fair for the RC truck though.....considering all those extra toes!

Thank you for being the kind of man you are, and don't ever apologize for loving a cat with everything you have in you. Us crazy cat ladies know that love all too well, and truly enjoy our male members who think like we do.

Take care of that awesome boy, and don't forget to stop in when you can to let us know how you guys are doing! It's also really great to have members like you who've had such wonderful success to lend support to other new members who come here as you did...Confused, scared, worried and lost. Words of encouragement from success stories like yours can mean everything to someone new!

I still think it should be illegal for a cat to be that darn cute!!...and he's photogenic too!

I haven't been on much these last few days (that old problem of work interfering with personal life  ). But there's no way I'm missing out on this celebration!
party_cat flip_cat Congratulations, Wease and Jason! :RAHCAT dancing_cat

Thanks everyone. I just wish it was nicer outside so he could get some exercise, its so boring in upstate NY in the winter. Mostly he sleeps 90% of the time.

Nope, unless he starts losing weight. When they start leaving food behind, that's a sign they're now able to regulate their food intake appropriately. I weigh both Mikey and Henry weekly to make sure they're maintaining their weight. Other than that, I just feed them whenever their bowls go empty and leave it for them to finish when they want.

Thanks, that's what Ive been doing. Just leaving his food out and he eats it when he wants, but I don't give him more than a can and a half a day.

That's about how much Mikey and Henry eat of the 5.5oz cans (~3-4 cans a day for the both of them). It also helps me spot when one of them is not eating much because there's too many leftovers (usually Mikey) or if one is eating too much because the other one walks around and acts like he's starving because there's no food left in the dish for him (usually Henry).

Im never able to catch Wease going pee but It still seems like he pee's huge amounts looking at the litter. I started the b12 only 5 days ago but hope it works soon. He seems so sore when he tries to lay down. He still don't site all the way on his butt.

Why is he sore?

My non diabetic cat will pee small amounts about 4 to 5 times a day but Dusty, my diabetic in remission only pees like twice a day but much more than the other cat. Guess all cats are different just like us people. :-D

That's good that you're observing him, you want to catch him early if he falls off the turnip truck. Keep testing his glucose to catch any sudden changes, once you feel secure that he's hanging on to his remission you can back off.

Dusty Bones said:

He doesn't sit all the way down on his butt, and when he tries he goes so slow. He will sort of hover a couple inches off the ground. When He lays down it seems like struggles to do it like he is all stiff.

I don't know of that's from neuropathy or what but I want it fixed!

When food is involved he acts like a kitten and bounces all over the place, runs up and down the stairs, then when he is just lounging around he seems slow and sore. He doesn't act like he is pain tho, its strange.

Dusty does the same thing, if he's laying around then gets up he seems slower than he used be but then once he's moving he does fine. Kinda has trouble jumping as high as he used to but it's slowly getting better. I'm sure it's a touch of neuropathy.
