Hi Everybody, We got the Vitacost 5000 methylcobalamin (B12) capsules and some Folic Acid for Squeaky and gave it to him for two days.

Sadly, it aggravated his IBD and he had vomiting and diarrhea again.

I was previously giving him food with human supplements and when I took the supplements out of the food, his IBD got better.

So it looks like adding the methylcobalamin and folic acid to his food will probably not work.

I take it our only other options are the weekly cobalamin B12 shots?

His legs are pretty week. He can still jump on the furniture. But he gets tired fast if he runs or scampers across the room.

I don’t believe there are injections for b12 methyl. What does he take for the IBD? Minnie has it too and the b12 and all the probiotics she’s on never affected her. I’m wondering if you should try just the b12 without the folic. I never used that. For the IBD, Minnie is on visbiome which is an IBD specific probiotic and budesonide.

what were the supplements you were giving him before and what food does he eat now? S Boulardii is the other on Minnie is on to regulate her stool
 
Methyl B12 is not available through injections. There are different types of B12. Methylcobalamin is used to treat neuropathy and is taken orally. There are a couple brands we recommend - Vitacost and Zobaline. The other type of B12 is Cyanocobalamin. This is the most common ingredient you find in the OTC vitamins and injections. This is used more for energy and improving general health. It does not work for neuropathy.
 
Neko never had a problem with neuropathy. And her GI problems were more likely small cell lymphoma than IBD - we couldn't diagnose properly because of her heart conditions. She was taking some B12, but that was orally and for her kidney disease. You want to try to get Squeaky in better numbers to help his neuropathy. Injections of B12 can help iBD kitties if the B12 is low, which is it for many. Yet another thing to get tested.
 
My Murphy struggled with neuropathy (late 2018). He got to the point he'd take a few steps and have to sit down. He struggled in the litter box, etc.
I researched and decided to give Zobaline a try. I found it online at Lifelink. The last time I bought it, they were out, but I found it on Amazon. It is not inexpensive, but within a month or so, Murphy was jumping on furniture. And, over the last year and a half has been able to jump on counters.
I gave it to him twice a day, until I felt like the neuropathy was under control. I continued to give him one pill a day, just in case.
I have read that giving them more than they need will not hurt them- they just pass what is not used/absorbed in their system.
Again, not inexpensive, but it bought my fella a few more years.

Hi thanks for your reply I am slow to answer. For the IBD he is taking budesonide and so far, it seems like it's helping a lot. The last few days, though, Squeaky will only eat baby food which is surprising so I don't know what is going on.

My sense is the folic acid capsule was just too much.

The supplements I was giving him before were the one in Karen Becker DVM's book on making homemade food for dogs and cats. He did fine with that for a long time, but when I took him off the homemade food and just started giving him plain meat, his diarrhea got way better.

Wow what an inspiring story. I have just ordered some, if it works it is worth the money. I have already accepted that this cat is going to keep me poor LOL.

Thanks Wendy, I've been giving Squeaky cobalamine injections for a couple of years already. I am going to try to zobaline.

I am trying to get Squeaky in better numbers, if you can give me any clues about how to do better at this, please let me know. Lately he's been having huge bounces although people tell me his bounces are getting shorter. Is that a good sign? Thanks.
