We need to loose weight

Walker - 9 years old diabetic for 2 years. 1.5 unit insulin (lantus) two times a day. 2.5 cans fancy feast chicken per day, with freeze dried chicken treats. 14.2 lbs (vet wants 10 lbs)


How can I get her to loose weight? I’ve tried food/insulin reduction and it helps but my cat acts like she’s starving (won’t stop crying, eating things she shouldn’t - toilet paper currently. But string, plastic, hair ties before) she’s always hungry (even with her 2.5 cans of food)

I know most weight loss foods aren’t diabetic friendly. No I currently do not curve. (I know how to I’m just no good I also don’t understand how to properly adjust insulin vs food vs bs)
 
Thanks for starting the new thread. If you would like to set up a spreadsheet and a signature we would be more than happy to help you with understanding BG numbers, feeding v BG v food. We need to se your BG data though as we can’t help without seeing what Walker is actually doing.

If Walker is in higher than normal numbers she will not be able to utilise the nutrients in the food probably. So she will be hungry. She may need her insulin adjusted but we will need to see her BG data to assess that.

Have you tried adding some warm water to her food to make it soupy. That may fill her up a bit.
Does she look overweight?
It is hard when they start to raid everything looking for food. My Sheba was a bit like that but she was much better when her BGs improved.
 
I do play with her...but she's lazy. She'll chase for a few minutes (string, laser,hand under blanket) she chases then just sits down and watches or walks away. I have toys all over for her to play with (cat nip in some of them) but she's doesn't touch it. She'll spend hours trying to get into her treats though.

I'll start a chart for her asap. I've tried testing before but I failed.

I do add water sometimes. It just depends on the day no pattern to it.

What sort of meter do you have?
What size lancets do you have? Size 26 or 28 gauge are the best sizes to start with.
If you warm the ear first with some rice tip of a sock that helps.
Also if you ‘milk’ the ear towards the tip that will encourage it to bleed.
As you test more, small capillaries will grow and it becomes much easier.

No idea how to use this thing. The only other time I've tried to curve I sued the meter the vet rented to me

Uhhh I suck at testing! I tried tonight but no luck. After 4-5 sticks I got blood and the damn meter timed out.. wasted a strip and a needle.so I gave up for tonight (she was stressed I was stressed so no good) I took her insulin down to 1 unit vs 1.5 that she was getting(she had a hypo issue yesterday) she ate most of her dinner and if I had let her the whole bag of treats haha.

I did get a bigger lancets so that did help. Now it is on me to pop and test...ill will try again tomorrow night. AM would be to rushed.(hubby and I have to get to work early)
 
Dont forget the treats even if its a wash, give a treat anyway. That is VERY important. You want kitty to equate treats with testing...BTW? Give YOURSELF a treat too.;):coffee:
 
Ok I tried and tried...poor kitty ear I don’t think I’m getting enough blood...im using the bigger lancet and the strip has blood on it but I either get an error reading or it doesn’t register anything and just sits there waiting on blood. Uhhhh
 
Oh dear...I remember those days. Take the meter instructions out and re read them. Sometimes theres a caveat that you cant touch this or that. The cleanliness of the strip. Or time outs. It could be something as simple as needing a new battery.
BUT its probably more the case that you are nervous doing this. (THAT WAS ME!)

Poking to draw blood on an unwilling cat is contrary to everything I knew about taking care of my cat. Yet there I was...poking away.
We have ALL been there. Repetition is your friend. If at first you dont succeed...blah blah blah. you get the picture.

Bottom line is, testing is the ONLY way to keep Walker safe. My Trouble absolutely hated testing. It took two of us, through his entire bout with diabetes. YEP! He finally got OTJ completely. We could never have reached that point without testing.
Bribery will get you everywhere. We did what ever it took. (shhhhhh) we used the dreaded Temptations. (And he still got off the juice.)

My hopes are you find that magical treat, do enough ear rubbing, before shot, sing to Walker, sing to yourself! whatever it takes.
Warm up the ear with a rice sock, but always end with a treat. Even if the test didnt happen. give that treat. You want him to associate everything "testing" with treats. If you feel its taking too many of them, once you get the testing part of it down, you can start backing off with treats. At least thats how we managed it.

Yeah it might be the battery. Idk how old they are. Worth trying.
Walker does well. She's my sickly cat so she's use to me doing stuff to her. (Pills, creams, shots etc). I do treat her and love up on her.
