Hello, hello!!

I hope you all had a good start into the New Year! Goodness me, what a few weeks it has been. >.< I have been to Germany to see my Mum just before Christmas and I haven't stopped since really. Life continues to be somewhat relentless in the moment, but I am determined to make more space for the things that are closest to my heart in 2015, so here is to being less stressed by Christmas 2015!! *pling* :coffee:

After my last posts here on the forum in early December I contacted Ruth at the Royal Veterinary College in Herefordshire to enquire about the remission trial and to see if she would consider Pedro for the trial. We spoke on the phone and made an appointment for the 05 January, and so on Monday I packed up my cat and drove across the UK, some 4 and a bit hours from Wallasey to North-East London to take Pedro to the clinic. We stopped at a service station where I let him out of the carrier (in the car of course) to stretch his legs and take his blood glucose levels, feed him and give him his insulin. :) He also had wee'd through the pillow I had put into the carrier and I changed that for a thick towel. The journey down was really nice, into the sun rise, all good!

A couple hours later we arrived at the clinic and met Ruth, who is so lovely and welcoming and of course completely on board with all the amazing things you all have made me aware off when it comes to looking after our diabetic cats! :cat:

Pedro was on his best behaviour, exploring the examination room, being nosy and just all round happy and purring! We worked through Pedro's medical file our vets had sent over and did a few pre-trial assessments of his agility, behaviour, routines, etc. Ruth explained what would happen at his stay, the different tests, the ins and outs of the trial and also what support the cat and we would receive should he get on the trial.

Over the past 2 days Ruth sent me email updates about the various tests they did and Pedro passed all of them with flying colours, lay quiet for the ultrasound (which in hindsight I reckon they could probably guarantee if they used a book or newspaper as cover for the examination table. Which cat *woudn't* want to lie still on that for 25 minutes?!), had his heart scanned, assorted blood tests and of course several glucose curves and whatever else, and so this morning (Wednesday) he started on Lantus!! I am so excited and so happy about this and I am much, much looking forward to seeing how this will change things, what his chances for remission are and all of that! Lots more reading to be done about Lantus now!! :bookworm:

It also means we have a few tumultuous weeks ahead as I will have to take him back to London in 2 weeks time and then again in a month, after that it spaces out a bit more. Our poor car will do some serious miles over the next few months but considering the amount Pedro wee'd on the journey down I can't see how we would manage this with public transport. Unless I put him in a nappy...? I run a cloth nappy library amongst other things... *ponder* :p

Anyway, here we are! I am going to pick him up today (Thursday) and then we are starting a new chapter on this journey. If it hadn't been for this forum and for all of you who read my posts and replied I would have never found out about the trial and we would have never received this amazing gift. Thank you so much!! Thank you!!! :woot: This really is a huge help as the free food and insulin and syringes for a year will mean we can save around £80 each month. Yay!!

I will keep you all posted about how we are doing with a new spreadsheet and regular updates from us!!
Lots of love,
Wibke & Pedro x

What great news! I'm thrilled for you both. :)

WRT carrier accidents, pads like Savic Comfort Pads placed over a towel are brilliant. They are very thin but they absorb urine really well and lock in odours, too. Once you get to the clinic, you can dispose of the soiled pad and put a fresh one in for the journey home. You can get the pads online - try ebay or Amazon UK. Go for a larger size than you think you need, because the pads have a border about 1+ inches wide on all sides that isn't absorbent. I have to use 2 of the No. 1 pads to line a small cat carrier adequately. When I order again, I'm probably going to try the No. 3 pads.

Looking forward to reading updates on Pedro's progress.

That's great!

So happy for you both.

I too will look forward to reading updates.

Wonderful news, Wibke!
Looking forward to following Pedro's progress. :-)

(It looks like the FDMB is turning out to be a good source of candidates for the RVC's remission trial. Long may it continue!)

Fantastic news!! I hope you'll like Lantus - we switched to it after starting on Caninsulin. Do they have you following a dosing protocol? Lots of good info on Lantus in the Lantus/Levemir forum here.

I had to do some 9 hour travel days with Neko - I used puppy pee pads in the carrier. They work like Aine describes and might be available in pet stores.

YES I am so pleased for you both. It's great that not only do you get help with the insulin medication but also a comprehensive all round check up. Congratulations.
