Hi - We are new here

Arn was diagnosed with diabetes around the end of January. When that happened it was quite a shock. I had taken him to the vet after noticing he was flooding the cat box. He was prescribed Prozinc and he got a Libre disk with a monitor for two weeks. A lot has happened in the months since then, some of which I am really not pleased with. But I am here now, things that never made sense to me have been confirmed or clarified, I am learning a lot and things are already way better then they were.

I stumbled upon the FDMB by what you might call accident, chance or divine intervention. Basically, I’d left his new bottle of Prozinc out of the fridge for hours. I had been told very pointedly if you leave it out it goes bad. I was absolutely furious with myself. He needed it and it would take at least a day to get him a new bottle. What to do in the mean time? How fast does it actually go bad? I went online and started searching to see if I could find any reasonable answers…Thank you for the posts, it was still fine and it is still working! After that, I kept reading and reading and reading. And I went to Wmart and got him a monitor and started making a list of questions.

I think we have been checking his BG for almost two weeks now, so we have some numbers. I wasn’t sure I could even do it and I never dreamed he’d be adjusting to it this well and I am so grateful for all the detailed information and so much helpful guidance people have taken the time to share here. I had some trouble signing up. My husband fixed it, hence the new user name. I am going to try to do Arn's spreadsheet today in hopes that we can get some help making sense of his numbers and how to proceed.

Thank you

Hi Laura and Arn and welcome to the forum.
Is this your first post or did you do a post under another name.? If there was another post, can you copy and paste it into this thread please. Just copy the URL and paste it.

Can you tell us what type of food you are feeding Arn please.?
It is great you are hometesting…well done. We have a spreadsheet you can use to add all the data into and then we can help you with dosing.
Here is the link to the spreadsheet and other useful information HELP US HELP YOU.
Have a look at the information about the hypo kit in that link and make sure you have one set up.
And here is a link to the FOOD CHART. Look for foods that are 10% or under carbs.

Here is the link to our PROZINC DOSING METHODS
Keep asking lots of questions, we are happy to help.

Thank you, Bron, it is so nice to meet you! This is my first and only post so far.

I started him on a combo of his kibble and Fancy Feast Classic pates on 7-5-24.
So tonight I fed him a scant 1/4 cup of dry royal cannin glycobalance and 1/2 a can of Fancy Feast Classic Pate.
He loves the fancy feast which I was not expecting. I don't think convincing him to switch over to it will be a problem.
But I realize the transition is not quite that simple so I've stopped there for now.

Further Details:
His vet prescribed the Royal Cannin glycobalance when he was diagnosed (he had been on the RC UT Rx food prior to that). I bought both wet and dry when they changed his prescription food but he simply would not eat the canned. If anything he'd just lick the sauce off and walk away. So after a week or so of that I gave up on the canned. He had just been eating the dry glycobalance a scant 1/3 cup twice a day up until the end of June. On 6-30-24 I started feeding him about 2 TBSP of lean cooked meat and cut back to a good 1/4 cup on the dry food and I ordered the fancy feast.

He is also showing weakness in his back legs, he started Zobaline on 7-7-24

Thank you, I definitely have lots of questions but still need to supply his numbers, I will get the spreadsheet filled in asap.
And I have most of the hypo kit in place.

Cheers,
Laura

Sounds as if you are getting well organised!
Do any swap over of food slowly so you don’t upset his tummy.
Tag me when you get the spreadsheet up and running. To tag someone you use the @ then start typing their user name. And then a little box drops down and you can choose who you want. Click on that person.
So if I was going to tag you I would write @CatServant

Thank you and I apologize, it is being held up because I have a problem with my computer.
I am going to have another go in the morning. I think I can do it but if not I will take you up on your kind offer.

Hi there! Thanks for putting all those numbers into his spreadsheet. That is so helpful. I see his doses have been bouncing around a bit. How would you feel about doing 1 unit and trying to hold that dose steady morning and evening and letting it settle in for a bit? I would like to see that dose held for 7 days unless, of course, he has a preshot that is green and then, just for now because things are new, I would consider shooting half a unit (.5) if he’s starting above 90 and as long as you can monitor the cycle. You’ve been doing a great job of testing so far!

Hey, thank you so much for your replies!

Yes, I’ll do my absolute best to hold him at 1u am/pm for seven days unless he is green.

Thank you, it is a relief to know that you don’t think I am poking him too much. Thought I was bold, buying the 100 pack of test strips , it really doesn’t seem like they lasted very long.

Hi, I’ve held Arn’s dose at 1 unit for a little over a week now and I just updated his spreadsheet with his numbers. No green preshots, so having to decide about shooting or not was never an issue. I did not make any further adjustments to his meals, I did not change anything during this period. I am not quite sure how to proceed and would really appreciate any feedback. Ideally I think I’d like to start cutting back further on his kibble and feeding him more of the LC fancy feast and see how he does. Should I try to do a curve on him first before changing anything? I could probably do a curve on Sunday.

Thank you so much, I hope all is well with you.

Thank you so much!

Okay, I’ll start cutting his kibble back slowly. I think Arn will be fine with it. I’ve noticed he gobbles the FF up first when both bowls are give to him at the same time. Nice that it won’t be a struggle!
Also, I ended up getting some free time this morning so I’m trying to get his curve done today.
