was this a seizure?

I know this isn't about diabetes but I'm hoping someone can help. I was sitting at my kitchen table and my cat was on the next chair. He suddenly fell to the floor and was flopping around on the floor and let out a few loud painful cries. It only lasted for maybe 30 - 45 seconds . Right after he was very unsteady on his feet maybe lasting for about 10 minutes. He went to his food bowl after that and ate quite a bit and was acting normal. He is now sleeping. I was unable to record it because it happened so fast but I did call and speak with the vet right after. He said he could have had a seizure or stroke and to try to record it if it happens again. Does anyone here have experience with feline seizures? Does this sound like a seizure? It was terrifying to watch and I'm afraid he will have another one.

Hi,

Oh, poor you! I know that must have given you quite a fright, because just a few months ago one of my cats experienced something very similar to what you described. I thought it must be some kind of seizure, but, in our case, the vet was unable to confirm this, or to identify the cause.

I understand that seizures in cats can present in many different ways. Some seizures have quite subtle localised symptoms (ie facial or ear twitching) and others involve the whole body and are much more dramatic to witness. This article gives a bit more info: http://www.petwave.com/Cats/Health/Seiz ... ptoms.aspx

Was it your diabetic cat that had the (apparent) seizure? And if so, how long after having insulin did this occur? If it's your diabetic then it could be hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood glucose caused by too much insulin). Are you checking his blood glucose. How is your cat now?

If it's not your diabetic, or does not seem to be related to low blood glucose, then, if it were my cat, I'd definitely have the vet check him over, and have any necessary tests done to try to establish the cause of this.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed that your cat will be just fine.

He is diabetic but he is in remission and controlled by diet. I checked his BG right away just to be sure and it was normal (4.2). He was diagnosed recently with CRF and the more I read the more I'm afraid this could be related to that. He was having such a good day and then this out of nowhere. I've been reading and even watched a few videos of feline seizures and haven't seen any where the cat lets out a loud meow/cry. He sounded so scared. Wish I knew if this was actually a seizure or not.

I absolutely understand how you feel. It was very like that with my cat too. My cat was 'screaming' and rolling around, and seemed so obviously to be either terrified or in pain (or both!). So I know how utterly shocking it can be to witness something like that, and how important it is to try to understand what has happened.

Has your vet suggested any further tests to try to establish the cause?

(((Hugs))) to you,

Eliz

PS. Re the remission. That's great news. Well done!

Edited to add: Much of the info I've read online about seizures mentions symptoms such as 'crying' or 'yowling'. Here are two examples:

It sounds like it. I used to have a dog that had seizures and exhibited similar symptoms. Even though it looks scary, they usually come out of it as if nothing happened. However, if it does happen again, your vet needs to see if they can find the cause. Seizures can be controlled with medication. My dog Sculley was on phenobarbital and she went from having multiple seizures daily to only having 2 or 3 a month.

CHECK BLOOD PRESSURE!

High Blood Pressure give them seziurers like that.

While BP also u-sound of Heart for Thickenings e.t.c

And Kidneys.

Pressure in Kidneys for Heart Blood Pressure.

Dr Lisa Pierson had her questions over my Gustav's Cardio Vet, when this sudden happened to Gustav but was proved to be both Hypotrophy Heart and Bone Narrow and Blood Cancer related and Lymph Cancer related

However BP was very High, and Björn first gave him a certain dose Norvasc. When BP not lowering Björn then added Fortekor.
Dr Lisa Pierson then wrote when I wrote that - Why? It was Unnecessary according to her to also start on Fortekor b e f o r e having tried adjusting and raising the Norvasc dose and see if it help.

But that was what was behind Gustav's sudden oncomming seizures.
