anyone else's kitty get anything like this? Mr b never had this issue before his diabetes.

its maybe 2mm or 3mm big. when i was pushing his fur away for the pic, it just started to spot blood. I find one of these once in a while and i'm not sure what to do about them. anyone?

(notice his rusty coat, but it looks like its growing back in as black)

Looks like a skin growth. Looks like a small version of this
Mur-growth.jpg

It was present when I adopted MurFee. I had a vet remove it during a regular office visit. I was afraid that MurrFee may scratch it and have it bleed. After removl it did not come back.
I would just monitor it.

Squeak has a growth that looks like that - her vet said it was a sebaceous cyst and they can happen in older cats. Sometimes gunk comes out of it (eww) and occasionally blood, if it's been irritated. It's grown a bit, but doesn't seem to bother her. I just keep an eye on it.

I have a friend whose dog is covered in those. Like Elle said, they were sebaceous cysts and would ooze/bleed if they've been bothered. Not pretty, but not a big worry either.

Hi Jen,

Saoirse has had exactly the same issues! I'm rather relieved to see someone else reporting them (rusted fur, small skin tags), especially since Saoirse developed the rusting and the skin growths since becoming diabetic.

For info, I asked the vet to remove three small skin growths last year when Saoirse was under for a dental. Histopathology for all came back benign. Another growth appeared last year when she was off insulin and again this year I got the vet to remove it while Saoirse was under for a dental. Again it was benign. The histopathology report said that it was most likely sebaceous in origin - possibly arising as a result of a skin pore being blocked. Obviously there's no guarantee that Mr Biddles' little growths are down to the same cause as Saoirse's but FWIW the growth in the picture looks exactly the same as the ones Saoirse has had.

The other issue is the rusting and that can be due to tyrosine deficiency. Bearing in mind that diabetes is an endocrine disorder it does have a knock-on effect on the rest of the endocrine system (including the thyroid gland). Having read your post I am now wondering whether these little skin growths may be due to hormonal imbalances - a bit like skin problems that arise during teenage years or at different times of the menstrual cycle? Also, hormones play a huge role in hair health and pigmentation.
