Okay. I have been using Ipet, which is a pain in the butt. It requires 1.5 microliters for the sample which is sometimes hard to get since my cat will not hold still for nothing. Anyway, I'm probably going out and buying the walmart relion meter since it seems to be highly recommended here. Since its a human glucometer and not one designed for an animal, how do you account for that difference? Do you have to do anything before using it on a pet since it doesnt have to be coded?

Hi,
I use Relion from Walmart myself and love it, it does not need to be coded and it requires only a small amount of blood. The difference when I tested with the old meter was .5, but others have more info on this. The strips are much cheaper also and the lancets too.
Will bump this for you.

I use two different human meters since I have two diabetic cats...I have the Bayer Contour for Autumn as she is a DCIN sponsored kitty and they supply her strips, but for Maxwell and as my back up meter for Autumn I have the Relion Micro and love it, love it, love it. It takes a blood sample about the size of a pencil lead.

Most of us do nothing about the difference in the two readings between a human meter and a pet only meter except recognize that they do read differently. We have protocols here for both types of meters and really the only difference is that while a 70 on a pet only meter is a cause for concern and a need to watch out for hypo, that is a perfectly fine number on a human meter and we don't start worrying about hypo until we see a 50 or below on a human meter. That's it that is about the only difference is that a pet only meter reads higher than a human meter but both are going to show you the trends that you are watching for and will tell you when your kitty is dropping too low and you need to step in to prevent hypo. Just the numbers you start watching them closer for the onset of hypo is lower on a human meter.

Does the Relion indicate whether or not you have enough of a sample? I have been getting faulty readings with the Ipet--probably because of the sample size requirement. If you dont have enough of a sample, it seems to test low. So, I end up wasting strips.

Yes it will give you an error message that you don't have enough blood but it is very hard not to get enough at least for my Micro as it takes such a teeny tiny speck of blood. I actually get more error readings on my Contour than I do with the Relion Micro.

My preferred meter by far is my ReliOn Confirm! I'm currently using one of my backups - a Contour but I get error messages every few tests because I misjudge the amount of blood required. The confirm takes such a small dot, I very rarely have issues. The ReliOn 'Prime', the newest one, takes a larger sample so, to me, would have the same issue as with my other backups.

BIG HUGS!

I ended up buying the prime but it still takes a smaller amount then the Ipet, so it should be better by far than what I'm currently using. As long as I get an error message, i'm okay with it. Since Ipet doesn't give an error message, I feel like I have still been flying blind. Since there is a possibility with not getting enough blood, is there a possibility with getting too much blood on the strip?

You can but it is very rare given the way the strips sip up the blood like a straw and if you do manage it there is an error message for that too with the Relions.
