Vomitting blood

Took my orange boy to the emergency vet last night because he walked in front of us and threw up blood.

Nothing noticeable on the xray, but he has a fever...just waiting for a call back on the blood work.

I have no idea what could be wrong.

:(

I'm sorry, but I don't know either.

I hope the bloodwork shows what's going on. You did the right thing taking him in.

Is he still there? Is he still vomiting the blood?

Sending prayers to you and your orange boy.

He back at home with me sleeping. No more vomit since we took him in.

I feel bad that he had a fever and I didn't know about it. I wish they could tell us when they feel unwell without having to puke blood in front of us.

I'm so happy that he's at home, resting and not vomiting. Don't feel bad--it is certainly not your fault--it really is hard to detect a fever in a cat. And cats are very good at "hiding" when something isn't right with them.

What did the vet say was wrong?

Just got the call. The answer seems to be, they don't know.

Keep an eye on him and keep up the antibiotics. In general his blood work looks good.

Hope this is a one time thing and it's past now. hope he is feeling better and on the mend.

Not to frighten you or anything, I had this happen to one of my cats and after xrays and ultra sound, there was something in his stomach or intestines, not sure which now, but it was a tumor.

If he doesn't rally in the next day or two, take him back to the vet for more extensive testing to rule out tumors, cancer, etc.

Also, look around your house to see if there is anything opened that should not be. It's possible he could have eaten cleaning products, gardening products, etc which are poisonous if ingested.

If you have plants, examine them closely, he could have eaten something from it that's poisonous to cats.

Try to rule out any possibility of ingesting something, even eating chocolate or onions.

Does he like to chew on plastic, string, etc? Some of those don't show up on x-ray very well.

Other candidates include ulcers, infection, and malignancy. Does he have any renal disease? Sometimes if the chemistries get out of kilter with that in may cause vomiting.

Does he stress easily?

As BJM mentioned, eating a UFO (unidentified foreign object) doesn't always show up on xrays, which is why an ultra sound can be helpful.

When my Sydney was young (1-2 years old), she loved to chew on things, especially pulling the thread (filament) from the bed quilt. She had that thing in shreds. What I didn't know was the she ingested this plastic thread like stuff that kept the quilt together and it got caught up on a piece of cat grass that she ate too. The vet did an ultrasound and found it in her intestines, it was surgically removed and she was fine afterwards. But she was violently ill and vomiting (not blood).

It's why you need to check everything and a follow up vet visit for an ultrasound may be a good idea.

If it happens again I would ask them to check for a intestinal blockage. My George (GA) was a orange boy also and I took him to the vet many times throwing up blood. The blood work they did never showed anything wrong. Blood work will not show a blockage in the intestines.
I dont want to scare you or anything but I think you should be aware of this. If it is a intestinal blockage the sooner it is found the better.
Take care

Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye open.

He seems to be going to the bathroom fine and no more vomit.
