Vetzilla and her prescription food...hmmm....

Hey everybody! It's been a loooooong time since I popped in here, but I thought I'd pick your brains about Duncan, who came to me 18 months ago when Janie flew away. He's 11 and does NOT have the dire beasties.

He's having some intestinal issues - poops are not formed, and he hollers when he goes downstairs to use the box. Don't know if he's yelling for pee or poop, so I put a box here in my home office to see what he's produced when he yells.

Several theories:

1. Poopin hurts.
2. Peein hurts.
3. Arthritis hurts going down the basement stairs.
4. He's just announcing he's got something to do.

He's had an abdominal u/s; showed "some inflammation" of the intestines.
He's seen a cardiologist; on meds for high blood pressure.
Blood work is all normal, except for slightly elevated protein in his urine.

I hadn't used this vet before, and she's a little short-tempered and pushy. I likes to call her Vetzilla, but not to her face.

Vetzilla is insisting that I switch him to a prescription food - Royal Canin - but she's not sure which one yet. Either:

--low-fat, modified for gastrointestinal issues;
or
--high fiber;
or
hypoallergenic, in case it's a food allergy.

OK. She wants to see him on that for a while, then if no improvement, do intestinal biopsies. I asked about a homemade diet; she dismissed that. I asked about Wellness and the like; she said the Rx diets are what she wants him to eat.

Because I find her abrasive, I'm not going to see Vetzilla again; we'll request another vet at the clinic. But I wanted to run all this by you, because I know the collective wisdom here is invaluable.

Duncan's only blip is that his poops are more like cow patties, and he hollers when he goes downstairs. I'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, caustic damnations of Vetzilla and anything else you want to share.

Thanks, old friends.

Just wanted to say "Hi" to you, Kris. Personally, I would find another vet. My sister's cat, now a GA, always cried and let her know when she was using the box. She wanted it cleaned up immediately. Hope used to do cow poopies and showed some sludge in her gall bladder. Ursodiol compounded for the dose has helped her. Her US's were frequently done because she was so high in ALT and AST. Used Marin and Denosyl and now just her heart meds and Ursodiol. One time she'd be inflamed one area, then that would be fine but another area would be inflamed. She still stinks something awful but doing good with her RCM 5 1/2 years later and her poops are formed. Hopefully others will be able to help you. Always remember Janie(GA) and always with her tiara on

she said the Rx diets are what she wants him to eat.
Tell her to want in one hand, and....

It sounds like either "something hurts" or it could be just him voicing that you now need to go scoop the box:-)
Has this happened just recently?

Bob makes a grand announcement whenever he poops. He has two boxes, and will only pee in the indoor one, and poop in the one on the screen porch. Silence after peeing. But he "tells the world" when he poops on the porch. I think he's saying "You probably can't smell this from there Dad, but the outside box needs scooping!" He insists on a clean box for next time! The routine is for me to say "Thanks Bob, good boy. The neighbors are proud of you". But he won't stop talking until I go out and scoop it, if I happen to be at home. Wonder if he does this while I'm at work...

I asked about a homemade diet; she dismissed that.
Any particular reason she's opposed? Or does she just like being contrary? I'd send her to catinfo.org to see what a feline nutrition expert has to say to her.

Thickened intestines suggest IBD - inflammatory bowel disease.
Here are some sites you may want to join (sent to me by another member):

Yahoo Feline IBD
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/felineibd1/

Yahoo Feline Pancreatitis
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feli ... s_Support/

Yahoo Feline Assisted Feeding
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Feli ... d-Feeding/

Yahoo Feline Lymphoma Caregivers Site
http://felinelymphoma.org/index.shtml
I hope you don't need this one, but just in case...

I sent the extra sites because many times IBD goes hand in hand with pancreatitis and inappetence. People on the Yahoo IBD list tend to cross-post on the other Yahoo lists a lot and I often learn something really useful from the Pancreatitis list about IBD and something really useful about Pancreatitis from the FAF list and so on."

You need to find out when he yells and what he is doing. Is he yelling, before, during or after? Is it while peeing or pooing? Is it start of stream, mid or end stream? that tells the vet ( a better vet ) a lot. Is there any blood in his stool?

I have no advice OR suggestions beyond what you are already doing...But you KNOW I am SO praying for Duncan.
Forever and always a Janie fan,
jeanne

xoxo to all of you.

watching duncan closely, he pees silently and happily, and he only hollers when he's walking around in the basement before he goes in the box. after he stopped yelling, he went in, produced a nicely formed trout and went about his day.

i forgot to mention that when vetzilla had me on the phone, she said she would leave a bag of rx food at the front desk. a bag. i said, "I DON'T FEED DRY." i should have just hung up right there.

so now, vetzilla's office called and said they were holding a case of royal canin gastrointestinal moderate calorie canned for me.

Well, you don't have to buy it ;-) I think he just wants you to know he is doing a poop so you can rush down and clean it up so he doesn't have to dirty his paws covering it

No vomiting? I have 2 cats who have shown inflammation in their intestines with 2 separate reasons. Sasha had worms(which I didn't realize for years as she was always indoor), and Phoebe. Phoebe's was actually a lot of gas build up from the mirilax I was giving her. After I stopped the mirilax her x-rays were normal. Another ECID example. Good luck with your new to you baby!
