My Symbah was changed to Humulin R last week and HE IS DYING! ! I dont have the money to take him to the vet or buy test strips. He was great on Vetsulin. His vet told me to give him half the dose with the Humulin. I am frantically looking for Vetsulin to keep my buddy alive. Any suggestion? I really love that fella..Susie

Humulin R??? Please check the insulin bottle. Humulin R is a very fast acting insulin that is used only for cats in very rare instances, such as DKA and only under the supervision of a vet.

Humulin N is a more common insulin used for diabetic cats. It's not the greatest insulin to use but it can work for some cats.

There has been a recall of Vetsulin. You won't find many vets who still have a supply of unexpired vetsulin.

What dose of insulin is your cat on?

You can go out to the Human pharmacy and buy a Human blood glucose meter and supplies for your cat. You do not need to use an animal specific meter, regardless of what your vet says. Any inexpensive basic Human blood glucose meter will work, even the store generic one.

How is your cat acting? Is he showing symptoms of low blood glucose levels? Symptoms of high blood glucose levels? Are you testing the urine for ketones?

Could Symbah get a prescription for Lantus tomorrow? Seems to be a great insulin for most cats. If you could get your vet to call it in to the pharmacy for you tomorrow, you could start right away and hopefully he'd respond much like he did to the vetsulin...

I am sorry but this is terrible advice that your vet gave you! Humulin R should not be used except in emergencies.

Where are you? Perhaps one of us lives nearby and can help

Jen

Your vet may have meant to say "Humulin N". It's still considered a harsh insulin for cats, but it is MUCH better than Humulin R - which, as has been said, is used only for emergencies, boosters, and treatment of DKA.

You said half the dose? What would that work out to?

Please let us know how we can help ...
