vet wants to be notified if cats BG over 100?

I'm going to call and ask but he said he wanted to know if his BG over 100. My understanding is 50-100 is normal for non diabetic cats. So of course its going to be over 100. He just started 1 week ago today. Just watching him i can tell he's feeling better. He has had a couple accidents (pee) the last couple days . Doesn't look like he's peeing as much and his diarrhea more just soft now. Anyways his levels have been 200-300. I checked it today at 3 when i got home he was a 262 . He is on 1 u of Lantus once a day . I give it to him at 6 pm every day just after he eats. I also recently switched him to raw food. I bought Fresh Pet (Chicken) I'm looking for a better brand since this one does have some veggies. Anyways what are the normal levels when should i be worried . ? When is it a real emergency ? My vet said go a head monitor at home but didn't give me any real guide lines. Ive done some research but every one has different answers
 
To add whats everyones diet plan? i have him eating roughly a 1/4 cup of raw food 2xs a day. 7:30-8am and again 5:30pm

Human meter "Normal" is 50-120. Of course your cat will be above that.... He's diabetic. We consider a cat to be regulated if the numbers are consistently under 300 with a nadir around 80-100. The only time it's an emergency is if the numbers go too low. When is close to 50 steer with food. If it's much lower or has along time to still drop THEn we might advise you to get to a vet where they can treat with an iv.

Most feed several times a day, not just twice. Diabetic cats need to eat more then noon diabetic.

Wont eating to much cause increased BG Levels? Is it ok to give dry and raw or is raw or wet the best? How much should he eat how often?

Raw and wet are best. I do dry but it has to be low carb dry and there are only a few. Young Again Zero carb and Dr Elseys are two.... I think epigen makes one and possibly orijin.

If the cat is hungry, feed him. I give a can of fancy feast classic morning and night and leave low carb dry out to graze on.

Cats have different appetites depending on how regulated they are, age, and how active. But if the cat is looking for food, give it.

diabetic cats aren't utilizing the nutrients properly so they need more than they would if they weren't diabetic.

Some here even use pet feeders to feed several times a day.

Some cats eat as much as 4 or 5 cans of ff a day. My cat never ate that much though.
 
ok thanks for the information. Where do i find the how many carbs the food has? back has ingredients but can't find carbs contents

I will have to look for a pet feeder.I have 2 non diabetic cats i feed them dry food (feed wellness ) in the morning and evening they usually finish it right away. Ive been feeding Rocky by himself in the kitchen and been giving him raw and wet . So if he's asking to eat or looking for food and his Blood sugar is on the higher end still feed him? sorry i have so many questions I am totally new to this never even heard of it. The vet told me he was happy to let monitor him at home but didn't give me any information on how . Ive been trying my best to research and figure it all out. I also don't get how the spreadsheet on here works. Ive been just writing down the date/time/# and when and how much i fed him . Like i said before he had 3 accidents yesterday (2 in the am 1 at night) and this morning he was laying in it) But he hasn't had another one today. I cleaned his box and the amount of urine looks a lot less then it was. I am getting better at taking his blood ( i do an ear prick) . Anything else I'm missing? I am trying my best to keep him happy and healthy as possible. Thanks again to everyone for all their suggestions information and support .I don't know what i would do without it
 
I don't feel quite confident enough to say to feed or not with high blood sugar but spread sheet wise it does have a instructional on how it's used.

Summarized. There's a box for a date, then there's the am pre shot box (amps) to put his reading of BG right before his shot and a colored box for how many units insulin given l, Then there's the pm pre shot ( pmps) and same as amps a space for units given. Ever +1 or +3 or so I'd just how many hours after shot and what reading he was at BG wise. If you need assistance I'm up usually rather late!

Yes you can feed him.... As long as it's a diabetic friendly food. That's great you are already taking his bg at home. What are his numbers like mid cycle?

Yesterday he was from 262 being the lowest (around 3pm) and his highest was 349. He gets 1 u of lantus once a day. I give it at 6 pm. This morning when i checked him he was at 394 . Hes been on insulin for 8 days now. And i raw/wet food for 6 days. I see alot of ppl give Fancy feast maybe ill try that one. He loved wet food so im sure he'll enjoy it
 
Is great that you're already testing him, that's going to help a lot, as you gathered information it will be easier to figure out what to do, like if you need to give him a higher dose or lower.

Regarding the amount of food he's eating, as long as he is not overweight (not sure if you mention his weight before) and is low carb food I would let him eat as much as he wants, thing is while he is not regulated the high levels of glucose in his blood, cause that what he eats can not be properly used by his body that's why he's always hungry is his body's way to say it needs nourishment.

Once his blood glucose starts getting to normal levels he will probably start eating more normal

He is skinny 7.5 lbs he deff needs to put on some weight
 
I am waiting for his vet to call back , I asked him about trying the Lantus 1 u 2xs a day (every 12 hours) i told him what his #'s have been. Sorry i am still trying to work on the spreadsheet here for everyone asking,
 
I didn't knew you were shooting only once a day, seems to me your vet is doing what mine did and trying to dose him as a dog, he made me try that and it didn't worked so well after tree days of that and some horrible numbers I went back to twice a that is how Lantus works best, better 0.5 u twice than 1 u once, that way you get insuline helping him 24 hours and not a lot for just half a day

Does anyone else have to sometimes poke kittys ear more then once? Sometimes i have to do it 2 xs . i feel bad :( sorry dude. I dont use the lancet device the noise of it scares him. I am getting better and i try to warm up his ear with my fingers before .

I know I have, and I don't use the lancet device either Babu hates it.

As far as warming his ears what I do is warm in the microwave a wet pice of cloth that I put inside a plastic bag and put it in his ear so that it gets nicely warm and it works as a pad or instead of the cotton when I poke him

Yup and I think most of us don't use the lancet clicker device either. I just use the device to hold the lancet. Many make a rice sock to warm ears or fill a pill bottle with warm water :).
 
Vet just called they want me to take his bg before his insulin tonight at 6 and then again at 7:45 am (just before i feed him)

Yes you should always try to get a preshot test. No food two hours prior to the preshot test so the number is not food influenced. Test, feed, then shoot.
