Hi! Murphy was first diagnosed a little over 2 years ago and after only 6 weeks went into remission. 8 months later was diagnosed again - has been about 16 months now. He has been getting low readings and his Vet has been slowly reducing his Lantus Dosage. Started at 2 Units - twice/day, then 1 1/2, then 1 and now is on a trial period with no insulin (will be a week on Tuesday). He's averaging about 200. I think he needs to try 1/2 Unit - twice/day. Could he be going into remission again? I thought it was a sudden thing. Am I wrong? Is it a gradual process?

Also, what is an ideal reading without Insulin? When Murphy is on insulin, his vet is always happy as long as it's below 300??????

Advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!

The ideal reading for a cat without insulin is below 120 with most of the time below a 100. So if average is around 200 i would think Murphy need a little bit of insulin.
But I would say if you are not hometesting, then you should probably be very carefull. When dealing with those numbers, then even a small amount of insulin can get the cat very low. But if you do hometest, it would be much safer and the chances of your cat going otj again will be a lot higher.

Agree. If he is 200 testing at the vet, he could be in normal numbers at home. If he is testing 200 at home, a tiny bit of insulin may push him into remission. But I would want to do it with some guidance from the Lantus forum. Lots of them are experienced in the OTJ process.

I know that Lisa was home testing, at least when she was posting on the Lantus board and following her vet's instructions. I agree with what everyone has said -- we generally consider a cat ready for an OTJ trial when numbers are below 120 but the majority of the tests are between 50 - 100.
