ok...

So finally got to see a vet that will be HIS vet, not a shelter.

Fructosimine was 478. No surprise there. I knew that was coming.

He has an ongoing chronic bowel issue. We feed EVo or California venison.

The following treatments have been attempted with NO IMPROVEMENT!

metro diaznole
childrens immodium
psylllium husk
tylosin
duck

venison....some improvement...

His new vet is offering one of two choices:

Royal Canin Intestinal at 25.5% carb.

or

seeing a specialist.

What choice do you make?

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

How about getting a private consult with Dr. Lisa? She knows more about FD and about diet than anyone I have ever heard about. I know she does phone consults. I think she mentions them on http://www.catinfo.org.

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

I was googling this and found an old fdmb post about a couple options. One was a diet of rabbit, one was using budesonide (sp?) as it apparently affects blood sugar less than prednisolone. But one person said that their fd/ibd kitty was doing great on pred and insulin with his sugar levels and ibd symptoms all very well controlled. Here is the link to that discussion.

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

Agree with Sue about the consult with Dr. Lisa, but I might imagine she would tell you to try a raw diet. There is Feline's Pride in my signature (endorsed by Dr. Lisa) or Dr. Lisa's own recipe on her website or Anne's site (also endorsed by Dr. Lisa). Here Anne talks about IBD and intestinal issues:

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

HIGHLY recommend Feline's Pride raw food! I mix it with canned Merrick to make it go longer as it is expensive (Merrick is one of the lowest carb/lowest fat canned foods), but I credit Feline's Pride food with getting Gandalf through 3 pancreatitis episodes without major consequences such as a feeding tube or hospitalization so it is worth it to me. It is easy to syringe feed, should that EVER be necessary due to inappetence. I recommend blending it first and using a large 60cc syringe such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Catheter-Tip-60-C ... 980&sr=1-1
Not that you need to do that with the food, but should you ever need to.

There are testimonials on Feline's Pride site about how it's helped IBD sufferers.

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

Sometimes the EVO's just too rich. I would try a few other things before cavaing to 20% carbs.

I've found since I started making my cats food (as created by Dr. Pierson), she doesn't really have grumbling tummy or bloody stools anymore. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's actually cheaper than the fancy canned food and you can make large batches and freeze it. What I like about making the food though, is the control you have over it, and the knowledge of exactly what's in there. It really minimizes the guess work of finding problem ingredients. I've also been adding 1/4 tsp of canned pumpkin and Slippery Elm Bark a couple times a week, and have just begun adding Dr. Goodpet's Feline Enzymes.

I've found this website helpful as well: http://www.holisticat.com/ibd.html.

I know what a bummer wrastling with IBD can be--especially when it seems to be such a perfect example of how "Every Cat Is Different"--what works for one doesn't for others. It may take a while, but you'll find the magic formula.

Edited to add: B12 shots. Also very helpful with her gut overall...

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

Thanks for all the input folks.

I've looked at Feline's Pride, but it is so darn expensive for me right now. What about Nature's Variety?

The shelter vet's next jump was to a raw diet. He said I could use the ground turkey and chicken from the grocery store with some added vitamins? I suspect his recipe is similar to Dr. Lisa's.

Attie goes nuts over chicken. Cooked or raw. I've given him treats of raw when I make chicken and he will claw my leg begging for it.

Re: Vet is encouraging Royal Canin Intestinal

WE HAVE SOLIDS!

WE STARTED NATURE'S VARIETY INSTINCT RAW RABBIT ON THE 16TH...

TONIGHT ....FORMED POOH!

After 9 months of liguid ewwww....!!!!! flip_cat

Well, it will be interesting to see how his healing intestines affect the BG.

All kinds of crazy hopes and thoughts at this point.

Maybe some experienced folks can give me some tips of what happens when the inflammation really goes away? I am really kind of excited to think we're maybe finally on the last leg or this healing journey....

That maybe his numbers will become a bit more predictable...

Hope the diet continues to work. There is also the raw rabbit or chicken medallions you can buy.....believe it is put out by Nature's Variety.

Feline Pride is way too expensive......shipping cost from OR to MI is out of sight.

Beth,

So happy to hear you are getting along well with the raw food. Sometimes, I think the preservatives and other chemicals in pet food are aggravating to their gut.

Hope that you see an improvement in BGs to go along with the improvement in the "IBD" issues. As you move along on your journey with Attie, I, too, would recommend a consult with Dr. Lisa for Attie.

Wish for health for Atlas.

I would think so. Hopefully this is his turning point to getting a more even curve as well as a reduction in his insulin needs since the inflammation is most certainly a contributor to all his insulin resistance. So glad to hear he is taking to the raw food so well. :)
