Does anybody know of a new-style vet in the Atlanta area, preferably in the north Atlanta area? I just went out and got all the ReliOn equipment and on the way home talked to the vet who was pushing HEAVILY that I return everything and get Alpha Trak 2 since that's what they use and therefore they won't know how to interpret the readings from my Relion. Since I refused, she's decided that Long John needs to be hospitalized ($$$$) instead of home tested.

So I'm asking if anybody here knows a vet in the north Atlanta area that would be able to work with me.

Meanwhile, the days keep slipping on by where we've not tested Long John or started insulin and he just keeps drinking away.

AAAAARRRGGGH,
Linda

I'm in the same situation and will be following this post (I'm in North Atlanta too with a vet that heavily pushes the AlphaTrak). To be honest, I've got both meters and have tested side by side and found only a slight variance between the two. I just use the Relion and don't bother telling the vet. I've actually had to rely heavily on this board as my vet doesn't seem to be very up-to-date with his feline diabetes knowledge. The only time I let him hospitalize my cat was when we started on insulin, so that they could monitor the first dose. After that, I've been doing it all and just emailing him my spreadsheet. He seems to be ok with this.

The first thing that I did prior to starting insulin was start monitoring the BG daily and completely switch to a low carb diet. Once he had been on a low carb diet for several weeks and I had monitored his BG daily, then I sent the info to my vet. After that is when I started the insulin. It was clear that my cat was not going to be diet controlled and would need insulin. I just wanted to do one step at a time.

See my signature link Vet Interview Topics for questions to ask candidate vets.

Then, do a Google Maps search for "Veterinarian near your address, Atlanta, GA"

I am in Kennesaw/Woodstock and I can tell you the vets to avoid. Of the vets I've visited in the area, and we've been to 4 in 5 years, I would recommend the Cat Clinic of Woodstock. It is off Towne Lake Parkway. I currently take my cat out of state to see the vet, but we are very close to Shiloh Veterinary Clinic. We have not visited them yet, but I may take Cobb there next year. I only use the vet to get shots and prescription refills. They don't direct how I dose Cobb at all.

WenDawg, I had a feeling you were in the area! Go Dawgs!!

Linda, let us know if you need any help in person. We're a big community here and ready and willing to help out when needed!

Yes...I bleed red & black :-D

Thanks for the info Suzanne. I appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately, Kennesaw/Woodstock would be a haul for me as I'm in Johns Creek/Alpharetta. I am the same with my vet...Just use him for prescriptions. I'd be completely lost in my cat's treatment if I had not found this board! :thumbup

Yes, we went to a vet in Alpharetta once and it was quite the drive. I've been recommended another one off Bells Ferry, but that is still a long haul for you.

Linda, where are you located? Maybe we can help!

WenDawg, I'M IN THE ALPHARETTA/JOHNS CREEK AREA! Where are you? The vet that has been problematic, but I still recommend for other things, is Mill Creek off Jones Bridge Road. I found The Cat Clinic of Roswell REALLY goes by the protocols promoted by this board, is familiar with this board and suggests it to his clients.

i'm in Midtown. My vet is FANTASTIC. She knows I do home testing and is super supportive.

Ansley Animal Clinic, ask for Dr. Wood. Tell her Katie Dow-Riggs (and Thaiger) referred you. She'll know you mean business as she knows how heavily I rely on home testing and this forum. She really is wonderful.

@mstyles where are you in the Atlanta area? Downtown or suburbs? After some time on this board and treating Cobb, I would retract my above recommendation.

Bells Ferry Veterinary Hospital would now be my recommendation -- after 4 vets in the Atlanta area -- this is the one that understood the most about diabetes, knew about FDMB, encouraged home testing and directed her diabetic patients here.

I am downtown Atlanta, but will go wherever is the best! I'm in the process of writing up a new thread about my sugar baby, Cooper, right now. I love my vet that we go to now, but just wanted to know if there were some vets out there who had some good experience with difficult cases.
