Hello all,
It has been several years since I first found and posted on this site. Thanks to kind people here, I was able to get my cat Owen seen by a great vet who was able to get Owen managed through diet alone.

We have just moved to GA a few months ago, and unfortunately all of a sudden Owen is not doing well. Overnight he took a big change for the worse and is now refusing to eat and acting sick. Can anyone recommend a vet in the Alpharetta/Roswell area? I will take him to the emergency vet in Sandy Springs if necessary but would love to have someone who is familiar with treating diabetic cats instead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've never had him act like this and am very worried.

Thank you,

Susan and Owen

Thank you so much. I tried to post an update a few minutes ago but apparently I did something wrong as it does not show up.

I ended up taking Owen to the Animal Emergency center in Roswell this morning. The vet there was very kind but not very encouraging. He is very ill, is in kidney failure, has pancreatitis (sp) and his labs are off the charts. He is on an IV and they are trying to stabilize him so they can start addressing his BG. To be honest I don't know that he is going to get to come home and I am beside myself. I have totally failed my sweet boy and can't stop crying.

You need to ask what stage of kidney failure he is in; knowing that may help you make decisions for him.
Also see Tanya's CRF site to find out more about managing CRF.

I am embarrassed to say I don't know; I didn't even know to ask what stage he was in. The vet said his numbers were awful and read them off, but I did not get a copy and didn't write them down. Really all I could do at that moment was try not to completely fall apart. We are supposed to call again in a half hour and I will ask at that time, as they were going to pull blood again to see if there had been any improvement.

As of 5pm he was a bit brighter and definitely more alert. They were hoping to start insulin after pulling more bloodwork and said we should call at 7 for an update.

I'm sorry I'm not very prompt with help... I've been out of town. I have used that emergency clinic on Mansel Rd several times and did like them each time, although they have a variety of doctors, so luck of the draw.

My vet is Dr Diane Dawkins at Mountain Park Animal Hospital. 770-587-4800 She is located on Highway 92 at the intersection of Sandy Plains Rd.

Perry Byrd (Sooty) lives in Alpharetta and loves his vet- not sure of her name- will try to contact him. Dr Roessner (loving hands) if my life depended on it,
but Ill get details...

PLEASE PLEASE read tanyas CRF site! It is so incredibly supportive and helpful with hundreds of links and great info on feline stuff especially kidney. If you need help with giving fluids- I'm a pro. Do it everyday and could help you.

Hi Nancy!

Thank you so much for all your help! Owen is at the emergency clinic on Mansell right now. He was cared for by Dr. Owens (ha) and Dr. Fitzgerald last night, and will be monitored by Dr. Fitzgerald again tonight (he is still on an IV drip, so can't come home yet.) I ended up taking him to Dr. Ray at the Cat Clinic in Roswell today, and was very happy with the care there; we will go back there tomorrow and hopefully - if he continues to improve - he might be able to come home tomorrow.

It seems very likely that Owen will need fluids at least for a while after he gets home. I might take you up on the offer of help!!! Have never done that before and will need to learn.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the kind thoughts... it really helps.

The ER at Mansell Rd saved Sooty's life, so I do trust them.. and yes, our regular Vet is Dr Jo Anne Roesner, at Loving Hands Animal Clinic, in Milton (on Hwy 9) - please give her a try and by all means, tell them that you heard about her, through us! She has supported us SO well with Sooty!

Thanks, all!

Owen spent the night at the emergency clinic last night, just so he would have monitoring over night. It turned out to be a good thing since his BG got a little low and they were able to address it right away. He was much brighter when I picked him up this morning and took him back to the regular vet's office, where he will spend the day on fluids again. Hopefully he will continue to improve and will be able to come home tonight!

The emergency clinic said they were not able to get him to eat last night ... so they syringed him. I am a little bummed about that but found he ate right away for me once we got to the regular clinic. In fact, he pretty much wolfed down a bowl of food (and some dry crunchy snacks, something he has not been allowed to have in years - you should have seen his cute face light up when he saw that bag.) I will go back there in a few hours around lunchtime to see if I can get him to eat more, as he seemed to eat better for me.
