Vet Appoinment on Saurday necessary?

Annie has an appointment at the vet saturday for some kind of blood test. Its not a curve, they are just taking some blood to see the long term affect on her or something? (he's really hard to understand due to a language barrier). Is this a necessary test? it's gonna cost me $100. he also said they may keep her on the Caninsulin after i expressed my concern about it.

does anyone know else take their cat in for a bi-weekly blood test... or monhly?
 
I would find out the reason for the test before I paid $100 for it! Remember - even if there IS a language barrier, he still works for YOU so it's up to him to help you understand even if he has to repeat it 10 times. I don't take mine in for any 'tests' like that - they use my information from my own home testing.

Would it be a Fructosamine test? Originally our vet wanted to do them on Ruby until I started home testing. Ru gets some wicked BG spikes at the vet so we decided its best to keep her out of there unless its an emergency.

Yes, i think i's Fructusamine, he wants to see how the insulin is working all around long term or somehing.... it didn't make sense to me cuz i'm home testing
 
Normally I don't recommend Fructosamine tests if you're home testing because you can just average your data from the past 2-3 weeks and come up with the same result, but from looking at your spreadsheet you don't have enough data collected yet to do that (You would need at least three weeks worth with both daily preshots and mid-cycle tests). Honestly, if doing the fructosamine means getting a different insulin like Lantus on Sat., or having to stick it out for 3-4 more weeks on Caninsulin until you have enough data to get your vet to change the insulin, I would do the fructosamine.
 
I have to agree with Julia, since you have only been testing since april 1st, maybe a fructosamine test would be relevant.
But if really you dont have 100$ to spend, simply tell your vet that you are already testing your cat at home and prefer to keep on doing this on a daily basis instead of doing a fructosamine test.

But nomatter what you choose to do (fructosamine test or not) dont let him go away with trying to convince you Caninsulin is the best insulin and you should increase dosage instead of changing... Tell him that you think Lantus could be longer lasting than Caninsulin and show him your spreadsheet!

And if for any reason he also tries to convince you that he has to keep your cat to get a BG curve with the new insulin... tell him you can do it at home!

Bring your home testing spreadsheet to the vet, to show him/her what you are doing. This may help to reassure the vet that you are testing and know what is going on every day at different times during the day, so a fructosamine test is unnecessary, as it will tell you the average bg level over the previous 2-3 weeks. And if you have the numbers from home testing, well that's all you need.

So, see if the vet is receptive to that idea. and if you don't have the money for the test, then tell the vet, and then ask him you will be happy to have the test, if he is willing to give you a donation and waive the test fee! That will shut him up pretty quickly! ;-)
 
There is no reason AT ALL to have all these expensive blood draws.
And you certainly don't need any Fructosamine test because it's just an average of your cat's BG for the last couple of weeks and you can get that from your meter! You have been testing and have plenty of numbers!

You can go to your vet, but just say you want a better insulin, and you do not want the blood draw done as your cat is not sick so there's no need for tests. Lantus is a much better insulin and that's the one you want to give your cat.

I like the idea of telling the vet that you will be OK with the tests, but only if they are FREE.

It's funny when I've said that to vets in the past, it never ceases to surprise me how quickly they stop suggesting so called necessary tests!

well i'm changing my vet on monday, i go and take a tour of the clinic today at 6. Someone suggested to me the Kingston Road vet, and i've been talking to them and am going to switch there.
