Very nervous about dental tomorrow

I really have no one to vent too that might get it but I'm just a nervous wreck about Blitzen having his dental.
I think I'm more uneasy just in the fact I need to pick up food and water tonight and then wisk him away to the vet by 7:30 am....my little guy isn't going to understand why mom is letting him be hungry and thirsty....how silly is this. I'm less worried about the process of the cleaning but still concerned never the less.
Gosh I need to stop thinking , I'm sure I won't sleep a wink tonight.

Has Blitzen had dental cleaning before? Did he tolerate it okay?

I just took Marshmallow last week for a cleaning. It's hard to take away their food at night, especially if the kitty is a grazer, like Marshmallow. She kept head butting me at around 4 a.m. to let me know she wanted food (she eats a fair amount in the middle of the night) but I just kept petting her and telling her she'd get a meal when she got home from the vet. :( I felt totally guilty but she did just fine. Just remember it's like poking his ear -- you're not doing it to hurt him, it's to help him. Good luck tomorrow!

Know the feeling - went through exactly the same angst in March. TWICE!! :rolleyes: (Saoirse threw a major eppy after I departed the vets on the first attempt. Had to do it all again a couple of weeks later. :( )

Sending lots of safe and successful dental vibes. (Have you asked your vet about using a suitable anaesthesia reversal agent?)
 
Larry could it be because he's in remission ? I don't know what's right or wrong.

No I haven't asked about that yet, hopefully I remember tomorrow
 
Larry, they told me to take water away from Marshmallow as well at midnight. I double checked, and they said yes, even though she's a (diet-controlled) diabetic.
 
Well my precious little darling is there now. At one point I almost left the vet with him and didnt go through with it but my head took over , I left in tears. All I want is my boys home with me.
 
Let us know how it goes! Blitzen will be okay and he will forgive you for making him get his teeth cleaned, honestly!
 
I'm just livid right now. I called and they hadn't even started!!! I spoke with the tech and told him that I'm very unhappy simply because that wasn't the deal. We made it this far out so he could be in the first time slot. He of course had an excuse however they were taking him right now. He did tell me 'I'm monitoring his bg" I told him to stop , he doesn't need to be tested every darn hour, he was at 169 at last check. I have to tell you if they been ready to start on him I would of been back there picking him up and calling it a day on this whole think.
Maybe I'm just overwhelmed and over reacting but so be it.
 
Lol what are they monitoring his BG for? 169 is nothing to monitor.. get to work vet! Luna dental is on the 19th (I've rescheduled it twice) and I'm terrified :(
 
Ok they just called, he has one tooth on the bottom right that needs to come out. He said its hanging on by a thread but it's more than likely painful for him so I said to go ahead and take it out , he is missing the same tooth on the other side ....didn't know. Everything else looks very good , they will call be shortly with a time to pick him up.

Can you tell me what they charge for an extraction? I've been curious for this incase Luna needs an extraction - her quoted price WITHOUT any extractions was like $375 for anasthesia, panel, fluids, vitamin shot, medication, etc.

I'm curious about all the pain med they talked about. If the tooth was hanging on by a thread I can't believe he will need a real strong pain medication so I might be questioning this , I can see a little something but nothing strong and for a length of time .
 
@pevsfreedom, I'm also in LA and I just had dental done on Marshmallow last week. It was about $350 with no extractions. That seems to be the going rate in LA. I go to a vet on the Westside who I love, even though I think he's expensive. Sigh.

You in Granada Hills (just guessing from the user name lol)? That's where I'm at. I've yet to find a real diabetic friendly vet, most of them seem completely clueless. Good to know I'm not really overpaying. I heard you never want the cheapest or the most expensive vet, lol.

I think typically they provide tramadol which is a pretty low level narcotic.
 
@pevsfreedom, I live in Venice. This has just been my user name forever. :) My vet is pretty good with diabetics if you ever want to make the trek to Culver City. He told me about Dr. Lisa Pierson a couple of years ago, before Marshmallow was diabetic. (He was trying to explain why I needed to switch her to wet food.) He supports home testing too. He seems to know less about IBD, which is my current challenge.

@Robin-S, they gave Marshmallow buprenorphine, which I think is like a synthetic opiod. So is Tramadol, which John / pevsfreedom mentioned.

Edited to add: She didn't have any extractions, but if they have to put a tube down the throat for breathing, it might be uncomfortable enough to warrant pain meds. Otherwise I'm not sure why Marshmallow needed a pain killer either.
 
My vet isn't too bad, he's supportive, though he'd never heard of anyone home testing Lol. He's very good with Luna though and genuinely seems to care about her health which is always a good thing, and he's literally a minute from my house.
 
Blitzen's bg is over 300 but they feels it's simply due to the stress of everything and expect it to go back down to normal ....I sure hope so. Anyone have this when their kitties had a cleaning and or an extraction ? Is remission over because of this?
 
I'm hoping all goes well for Blitzen & am anxious to hear how he's doing once you get him home from his dental appt. I will be making a dental cleaning appt. soon for Bat-Bat - and I'm dreading the whole experience (esp. as relates to what the stress will do to her BG levels). She is so fractious in the vet's office that she needs to be gassed before anyone there can handle her in any way. Sure wish their was an easier way to keep a cat's teeth clean. (If I even TRIED to get a finger in her mouth, I'd be minus one finger.:eek:)

Luna jumps 200-250 points at the vet every time she's there. I wouldn't worry about it until a day or two after she gets back home, then consider if remission is over. A nondiabetic cat can jump to 300+ as well during a vet visit and be fine afterwards.

Dental's also will lower BG levels afterwards if there was any inflammation.

Interesting. They didn't put Marshmallow on antibiotics and I'm really glad because she's an IBD kitty, which means her intestines are super sensitive to antibiotics. Last time she was on antibiotics (in January for a UTI), she had diarrhea for 4 months. It finally got under control when she had a steroid shot, but then she got steroid-induced diabetes. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: All to say, I would have flipped out if they put her on antibiotics. (Obviously I'll give them to her if she ever needs them, but if it's not medically necessary, then I don't want her on them.)

Sounds like Every Vet Is Different. EVID!!
 
Maybe they knew it would affect the IBD? Luna's been on antibiotics like 4 times in the last 9 months, for her teeth alone, which is why we're getting her dental done now since her #'s have lowered.

@granadilla - Hey, you came up with a new acronym - brilliant!!!:D

Re: Antibiotics after dental: Will be interesting to see what my vet plans to do; I'd prefer that Bat be on antibiotics as seldom as possible, but then on the other hand, if there's risk of infection ... guess I'll ask about it when I schedule that appt.
 
Blitzed is home!! He was a little wobbly at first but never went into hiding or went to sleep anywhere much to my surprise. He has eaten twice already , I've given him about at tablespoon each time. He seems pretty good.
He won't need any pain meds until tomorrow and he was given a shot of antibiotic after the cleaning. They gave him Onsior 6 mg and Buprenex oral 0.30 mg .
His bg has already dropped 100 points .....I'll check him in a day or two.
The took extracted one tooth, total for today was $494.23 plus the $80.00 last week for blood work.
 
Also thank you all so very much for your well wishes and for putting up with me today as I was really worked up and stresses and coming here made me feel much better.
I know some of you are going through so much more with you kitties but having all you for support means the world to me.❤️

You can return the favor on the 19th when Luna gets her dental and I take a bunch of xanax to keep calm! Lol. Glad everything worked out so well.

I don't know the last time Blitzen had dental or how bad his teeth were but try and grab a few tests on him for a few days since dental cleaning can lower BG's (if chronic inflammation was causing high BG's).
 
We had a 19 year old (that looked like Shiloh) who never had a dental and was totally fine. A lot of people won't get a cavity their whole life either.

Not at all.
My old kitty was 16 and never had a dental. Growing up my grandparents three cats were all in their late teens early 20's and never had denials ....this was in the 70's
