Fritz's Mom

Member
Why does it seem that ever since I decided to manage Fritz at home (home testing etc) that my vet seems to be very rude?? I called in there today to get a refill on his Noroclav (for his teeth) and was mentioning how well things we going.

Does this tend to happen when you take your pets diabetic care into your own hands? I was hoping she would be happy, seeing as she wanted me to put him down 2 weeks ago??

GRRRRRR!

Thanks for listening! Just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced this before.

Thanks :-x

Actually, that's a lousy vet to me.
I would think if a vet truly cared about animals, I would expect to hear joy when I let the vet know of good progress. Is your vet the only vet in town?
If the rudeness continues, I may consider searching for another vet.

If she is the only vet in town, don't bother to keep her updated on improvement, but rather let her see it in the cat in person when you have a vet appt.

Hmmm...yeah that doesn't sound right to me. Home testing shows you care and want to help your cat. If anything, she should be happy that you are assisting her in your cat's care.

My vet was actually impressed yesterday that I was doing home glucose testing on him (she usually recommends urine glucose testing), especially since he was such a bad boy at the vet's yesterday.

I always say, you employ doctors, pharmacists, vets and mechanics, you don't like them, FIRE THEM! The power of good-bye..so magical!

It's pretty common for vets to not advise home testing. Generally you can work with your vet regarding that... you don't need their seal of approval to do anything.

But for them to be against it, and go as far as condemn you for it, is just wrong. Ask her - if she were the mother of a diabetic child, would she ever inject insulin into them without testing first? So why wouldn't we test our cats? Is their health of lesser importance because they're not human?

With everything you've been through already, it sounds like you need to start fresh and find a better vet for you two. Having a vet you can rely on in emergencies and turn to for SOUND and SAFE advice is a huge weight off your shoulders.

My vet has been good enough to be delighted in Akbah's improvements, and delighted that I worked out how to home test, and just generally delighted. I don't think that your vet is being very gracious, maybe she feels a bit threatened? I just re-read your post and am so sad to think your vet wanted to put your cat down. I guess I don't know the details, but considering you have found your way to better days, just imagine if you'd followed that advice. We're all human, but sheesh!

Fortunately I haven't had that happen - the vet who is handling Sitka's case loved the fact that I already knew how to hometest. When I mentioned that my husband is unemployed she immediately said "In that case do your curve at home and just bring me the results so you can save $120.00". If I was in the situation of a vet not happy to the point of rudeness I would find another vet. I think its like your doctor - they have to be on your team or find one that is. Jan

Sounds like your Vet would rather be charging you for something you can do more accurately at home. We NEED our Vets but some have quite an attitude. Sorry but I'd be Vet shopping.

I don't even think it is about the money, to be honest. I was in there yesterday picking up some insulin and I was chatting with one of the ladies in there, long story short, I showed her a picture of Fritz from the other day and then said can you believe Dr. B wanted me to euthanise him 2 weeks ago? Her jaw nearly dropped to the floor. I have been through 2 vets in this area so far. Fritz doesn't travel well and this is the closest vet. So, we shall see.

Cheers :)

My vet wasn't thrilled with home testing at first. Now she's very happy when I bring her a spreadsheet and adjust the dose as needed instead of waiting for her. She sees that what I'm doing is appropriate and it gives her so much more history than what she would have had.
