I keep running into...VEGETABLES  A cat food will say it is grain free, but I look at the ingredient list and it has a bunch of vegetables in it. What are people's thoughts on veggies? Several brands have been recommended to me (not by people in this forum), and the people recommending them own diabetic cats, but the foods have veggies in them. Is it okay to turn a blind eye to veggies? I would think that you would want to avoid veggies, because they contain fiber and sugar.

On a side note, I have tried Wellness once before, and he wouldn't touch the stuff. We have since gotten his thyroid under control, got him to gain 3 lbs, and switched to Lantus, so it's possible he may feel differently about it now, but I am hesitant to try it again.

Root vegetables, fruits, and legumes have carbohydrates in them. Obligate carnivores don't go hunting for potatoes, nor peas, nor cranberries. Only trace amounts of those might be found in a mouse's stomach.

Check out the food list at Cat Info. Its on the right hand side, in the black column.

You can "ignore" the vegetables if the food is low carb (less than 10%) because short of making your own cat food, it's really hard to find inexpensive, low carb foods without brewer's rice or peas and carrots or other junk in it. I feed both of mine the Friskies Special Diet, which contains the brewer's rice but is still only 5% carbs. I used to feed them Nature's Variety (also low carb) but I found my OCD wouldn't let me serve it to them without me picking out the noticeable peas and carrots first. ohmygod_smile Too expensive for that type of work.
