Casper has been on insulin (Vetsulin) for about 6 weeks now. He's doing pretty well; appetite is much better and he hasn't thrown up in weeks
. He's on 2 units, 2x a day. All things considered, we're pleased.
My question isn't about meds, protocol or anything like that. It's related to rest and relaxation on mine and my fiances's part!
We are planning to be married shortly if we can pin down a date lol. We're not doing a wedding, just a civil ceremony and hoping to get away for a couple of days. We'll deal with a longer vacation some time next year.
Our vet does board and I'm leaning towards doing this with both Casper and Cocoa (who is healthy). I like that they will be monitored 24/7, and that Casper will have his insulin giving to him by professionals who will be there in event of a problem. However, I also dislike the idea of keeping them both in cages however large they may be for an extended period of time - hence why we are probably only going to go for a couple of nights to see how it goes. I also like that they keep cats away from the dog area and the two of them can be placed in neighboring cubbies, so if they want to hang with each other they have the ability to do so - they aren't "bonded" per se, but do enjoy being near each other throughout the day and, like to play fight at times too. I have some concerns that Cocoa won't be happy there; she's far more energetic and somewhat more shy than Casper is. Casper, for his part, is extremely social to newcomers and at his age, very laid back and placid. The staff have already told me he's very happy being there and everyone adores him so, I think he'll do fine for a couple of days. Again, not so sure about Cocoa.
We could hire someone to come into our home, which would be preferable as far as keeping their lives stable but, I dislike the fact that they won't be watched over closely. If some medical issue arises, it would be hours before anybody know about it. Also - our front door has problems sometimes and this is a concern also. Unless one is well versed in how to deal with the door, I can see someone standing out there getting good and frustrated! We're about to have it replaced, but, it probably won't be in time for this little vacation.
Costs will be somewhat higher to board at the vet but we'll suck it up. I know they'd be well taken care of there.
I'm just looking for feedback and to hear your experiences in going away from the home while dealing with an ill cat. Is 2 days away a possibility?
