Vacation/Questions

Casper has been on insulin (Vetsulin) for about 6 weeks now. He's doing pretty well; appetite is much better and he hasn't thrown up in weeks :D. He's on 2 units, 2x a day. All things considered, we're pleased.

My question isn't about meds, protocol or anything like that. It's related to rest and relaxation on mine and my fiances's part!

We are planning to be married shortly if we can pin down a date lol. We're not doing a wedding, just a civil ceremony and hoping to get away for a couple of days. We'll deal with a longer vacation some time next year.

Our vet does board and I'm leaning towards doing this with both Casper and Cocoa (who is healthy). I like that they will be monitored 24/7, and that Casper will have his insulin giving to him by professionals who will be there in event of a problem. However, I also dislike the idea of keeping them both in cages however large they may be for an extended period of time - hence why we are probably only going to go for a couple of nights to see how it goes. I also like that they keep cats away from the dog area and the two of them can be placed in neighboring cubbies, so if they want to hang with each other they have the ability to do so - they aren't "bonded" per se, but do enjoy being near each other throughout the day and, like to play fight at times too. I have some concerns that Cocoa won't be happy there; she's far more energetic and somewhat more shy than Casper is. Casper, for his part, is extremely social to newcomers and at his age, very laid back and placid. The staff have already told me he's very happy being there and everyone adores him so, I think he'll do fine for a couple of days. Again, not so sure about Cocoa.

We could hire someone to come into our home, which would be preferable as far as keeping their lives stable but, I dislike the fact that they won't be watched over closely. If some medical issue arises, it would be hours before anybody know about it. Also - our front door has problems sometimes and this is a concern also. Unless one is well versed in how to deal with the door, I can see someone standing out there getting good and frustrated! We're about to have it replaced, but, it probably won't be in time for this little vacation.

Costs will be somewhat higher to board at the vet but we'll suck it up. I know they'd be well taken care of there.

I'm just looking for feedback and to hear your experiences in going away from the home while dealing with an ill cat. Is 2 days away a possibility?

We boarded our diabetic at the vet for two nights this summer, and family visited to feed the other cats.

I had to board my Callie for 5 days, just a week after her FD Dx. My stepmom was very ill and I had no choice but to drive the 90 miles and stay with her. It cost us $25/day. She didn't seem to mind at all. The staff was wonderfull and the techs were petting and loving on her whenever they had the time. While she was there, they ran a curve and adjusted her insulin and food. Callie never minds going to the vet, so I guess she was happy there.

Wow 25 is really cheap!

If I had more than two cats, I'd keep Cocoa at home in a heartbeat. She would do much better at home, with the company of her kind. Unfortunately not a good reason to add to our family! :p

This is comforting to know. All the techs at our vet are really wonderful and good with our cats. Neither of them mind being at the vet - it's the getting there they dislike lol. $25 is about the price for a healthy cat to be boarded - I think it was $35ish for the diabetic one. So, $60 more or less each day. They will add play time for an added fee also but not so sure they need it. $60 is a lot but it would be similar to get someone to the house. Another reason we only want to go away for a short period this time around. If they do well, we can then consider a longer stay for them down the road.

We used university students to stay at the house and paid them a small amount. There were always one or two who were glad to get out of their "digs" or away from their parents and have some time to themselves. Living on the water, and telling them to empty the food cupboard and the liquor cabinet helped (of course, we hid the good stuff).

$35 for boarding a diabetic cat with 24/7 care and medication administration is amazing!!! I have been looking for vacation care for my cats and was quoted $104/day for the diabetic one.

@Red & Rover, I'm intrigued about you idea of using university students. How did you find them and how did you screen them?

Thanks!

DH taught at the university. We both knew some of the students very well. Then our own kids went to the same university for their undergrad and masters, so, even more connections. If you know someone at the university closest to you, you could ask them if they know anyone suitable.
