Hi folks

Quick question: does anyone have any home remedy treatment to relieve a cat with possible UTI/cystitis?

Bob has been taking ABs for his teeth (infection!) for 6 days (2 more days to go) but has this evening started licking continuously in his nether regions, reminiscent of another cat we had who was prone to cystitis.

Bob's dribbling pee while he's licking, so I'm pretty sure he's having trouble.

Can't get to a vet until tomorrow but really need to find him some relief as he won't stop licking himself!
 
I’ve used Cantharis on my cystitis girls to good effect. It’s used by humans with cystitis too. The kind I use is by Boiron 30c. You can get it at The Vitamin Shoppe or possibly other health stores.

I'm going to have to get Bob to the vet first thing. He's licking himself continuously - over two hours now! It's come on so quickly, no signs throughout the day at all.

Typically he started after it was too late to contact the vet and we don't have any emergency cover here.

He's not even interested in food so this is going to make things difficult for tonight's insulin shot if he won't eat.

He's not blocked, as the urine is trickling out as he's licking (& when I lift him to see what is happening). Also no blood (which our old cat used to get with his UTIs) so at least that's a positive of sorts.

So stressful, as I can't do anything to stop him and have nothing to ease the problem.

I don't understand how he can have this after being on ABs for six days :banghead:

It's going to be a long night...
 
Oh I’m so sorry! I know that sucks. A few other options:
  • Corn silk extract (can be bought at some health food stores). Just make sure it’s alcohol free. Dose is usually 7 drops up to 4 times a day during a crisis.
  • Corn silk tea: http://livingawareness.com/make-corn-silk-tea/ May not be as effective but easier to make since you just need corn! Dose 6cc up to 4 times a day.
  • D-Mannose. Found at many health stores including Whole Foods. 1/4 tsp 1 time a day. Not sure this would help or be fast enough but couldn’t hurt.
  • Marshmallow Root. I’ve not used this but I can probably find a dose if you need.
If I think of anything else I’ll let you know @Tilou

Ah, that's interesting - I have some in the cupboard. He's calmed down a bit, eaten something and I've put a couple of drops of Metacam in his food to counter any pain he might have in trying to pee. He's stopped leaking when walking about, just when he starts licking - so I've covered all the chairs he likes to sit on.

I shall be on the phone to vet first thing.

if you give fluids is even better.... the coli would rather stick to the D mannose and when they pee is comes out no side effects. If it is a native infection you need AB but this can prevent. They need enough fluid in bladder to flush it out tho-

That's brilliant! Thank you.

The strangest thing about this is that Bob is six days into an eight day course of amoxicillin (for teeth infection) so I can't understand why the AB hasn't dealt with it.

Isn't he just?! And sods law there's no sign this morning of the problem. He's had breakfast, insulin and ABs, and is now settled down to sleep. So we're going to monitor him this morning rather than rush down to the vet with no symptoms of the problem. First sign of him licking again though and he's in the box!
 
Could be sterile cystitis. That would just be inflammation of the bladder with no reason. AB will sometimes help with that as it helps bring down inflammation, but not always. Could also be an infection that simply doesn't respond well to that particular AB. Glad to hear he's feeling better this morning! Let us know.

I did wonder about inflammation (as one of our other cats used to get bouts of it) and it seems that having given Bob a modicum of Metacam (which he has prescribed for his teeth) he has returned to normal.

I followed him in the garden this morning and he did a mega pee with no difficulties, which I was able to test for ketones etc. It was all clear.

He's quite comfortable now, so I'll just continue to monitor him.
