My Simon is battling a UTI and has been on Baytril for 3 days. Over this past weekend he was spending a lot of time in the box passing only tiny dots of bloody urine so we made a trip to the ER on Sunday night (why does this stuff always happen on a Sunday?). Of course I was concerned about a possible blockage, but his bladder was empty so the vet suspected an infection. Thankfully the blood in his urine disappeared rather quickly, and the amounts being passed are a little larger, but his BG number went over 300 PMPS tonight and he hasn't been up there in over a month. Ugh. Can an antibiotic cause this much of an increase in BG?

The Baytril shouldn't effect the blood glucose but the UTI sure can!

Was a culture and sensitivity done when you took him into the ER? If not, it's totally possible that the Baytril just isn't the right antibiotic for the bacteria that's causing the UTI in the first place.

Thanks Chris. I am afraid I don't know.....but from the reading I have done on here, it appears that some others have not had good results with Baytril. Guess a call to our regular vet is in order. Last time he had a similar problem he was given a Convenia injection (long before his diabetes diagnosis) but I read even more concerning things about that antibiotic! Guess there are opinions both ways on all of them, but at his age and considering all his health issues, I really hate this gambing.

I did start another thread for this, but no replies yet. His BG is still in the red and I'm getting more anxious by the day. Is there something else I should be doing for him?

This won't help diabetic cats but since we put all our boys on Royal Canin SO the UTI revolving door went away.
Good luck Simon.

Thank you. He is doing much better as far as his UTI goes, but his BG is still in the red zone. Mom is very concerned.

Link is perfect. Thanks. Wendy & Neko answered you over in the Lantus forum I see. Best to ask about the high red numbers in that same post over in the LANTUS ISG.
