using aquarium gravel to assist in checking for ketones

how does this work? after you get a specimen in the gravel must you empty it out and rinse the box? if not, wouldn't you be adding urine to urine, not to mention the odor?

i've got the gravel, but need advice on how to handle after getting the 1st specimen.
 
Clean out the box. Put just the aquarium gravel in and leave her there awhile until she goes. It doesn't take a whole lot of gravel - just enough for her to get the idea. The urine won't stick to the gravel, so you can just tip the box and have a sample to stick the strip in. After you're done, you can put the regular litter back in. (Some people have just a small box they use for the gravel. You can rinse out the urine and reuse the gravel)
 
what i'm using is like real tiny stones. i use this in the aquarium i have my turtle in. she walked up to the box, put one paw in, then another, kind of felt around and she turned around and left. we have 3 other litter boxes as we have multiple cats and i'm afraid if she doesn't like the feel of this, she will use another box and i'll have nothing. she's been using this spcific litter box since she's been recuperating, and i'm afraid this will scare her away. shall i leave it in there for awhile and maybe she will go in later? she must have had to pee or she wouldn't have gone in i wouldn't think.
 
I was never able to test for ketones with a strip in mid-stream because both of my cats go into the LB then turn around to put their head out the opening. Even with a LB with no lid, they faced their back ends to the wall, so my only option was to lay the strips in the puddles after they left.

You can try that method; just stalk when your cat goes into one of the LB and check after she leaves.
 
Or leave her in the room for a while with the gravel and see if she decides to use it - with no other boxes available. I used the tiny aquarium gravel - don't know if the larger gravel will be appealing to her.
 
I bought a Smart Cat box years ago and several of my friends bought one after they saw mine. No more expense of cat litter and you can test for the urine anytime because its separated into a plastic container.
