I am getting ready to take my first BG reading. I am in Australia and have a fast clix lancet whcih came with the BG meter. My question is what number do i choose on the dial. it recommends 2 for humans just starting. i will be doing it opn my cats paw and dont know if 2 will penetrate. I can go up to 11. Cant find how deep or what is recommended for a cats paw using this device. Says that 1 is 0.5 and 11 is 5.5- but that means nothing to me.

I have never tested on a cat's paw, I always use the ear, but I would imagine the depth of the lancet would be about the same. I bought a new lancet device recently as my old one had had it. I started off on the 1 mark then when it only gave a tiny drop of blood I moved to 2. You should be able to gauge how high to go by the size of the drop of blood you need which is not much bigger than a pin head really.
Good luck with the testing.

ETA I see you live in Glenbrook .....pretty place

I had an awful time trying to use the fast clix that came with my accu chek meter--it is not easy to use with cats. I would either try to free hand the poke, or look for a simpler lancet device at your local drug/grocery store. I use this one from Walmart, and I know you can't get that one in Australia, but I'm sure there's something simple like it at the store?

We had the Multiclix and always needed setting 5 for the ear. I don't know how the Multiclix compares to the Fastclix. In the beginning it was a little difficult, but apart from that we never had any problem with the lancet and found it great. I would never, ever use the paw, so I can't recommend a setting for that.

Actually--maybe it was the Multiclix I had trouble with (whatever came with my meter). Now that I'm looking at pictures of the fastclix, I think that is the Accu Chek's simpler device. Sorry for the confusion.

Well the fast clix didnt do the trick, and I tried using a syringe on his ear and then went back to paw. First attempt worst attempt. This morning had to use syring again and ear was successful. Going to get some free lancets from Chemist for next test. The fast clix has 6 lancets and they recommend setting two for humans. I would not use it on ear as it would go through ear. I might use it again if I wanted to alternate sites between ear and paw. Max was happier with the ear then the paw.

My first successful home test was from my boys paw. He kept moving his head when I tried the ear, but also moved his paw when i was trying there. I think the paw worked because it was a bigger target that first time, but I have since worked with his ears. What size lancet are you using right now? The bigger (28g or 26g) are easiest to start with, as they will give you more blood until Max's ears get used to the testing and bleed easier. I used the larger lancets for the first few days and was then able to go back down to the 30g. It will get easier the more you do it, Max will hopefully relax and enjoy the attention :) Cooter now just plops down on the counter and waits for me to get the test, half the time purring along because he knows its breakfast or dinner time when I'm done :cat:

It is safe to use the meter lancet on the ear. We only ever used the Multiclix and had no problems, other than it was pretty difficult to get blood in the beginning. Setting 5 was the only one that ever worked for us, but you would need to experiment and just adjust if it goes through the ear for you. Back the ear with a folded cotton pad and dab a little vaseline on the ear to help the blood bead.
