Does anyone have any advise on how to lower the urine pH in a cat?

Here are the results on urinalysis on Friday:

pH 8.0
PRO 30mg/dl
GLU neg
Leu 500
KET 15mg/dl
UBG 1mg/dl
Bil neg
BLD neg
S.G.=1.040

1/5/11 the pH was 7.0

I feed fancy feast chunky chicken. Is there another ff i could feed that would help?
Has anyone used Cranberry extract? Vit C?

What does your vet recommend? Does your vet want to acidify the urine? I think I recall that Methionine acidifies the urine. Are you doing anything about the positive ketone value?

Larry, my vet mentioned diets for the pH value but i didn't want to use the prescription diet because of the ingredients.

Larry, what do i do about the ketones? They were higher than that last time. Vet said the ketones were due to the urine being concentrated.
He said the spec was ok. Why would Fluffy have ketones?

thank you

A kitty in good health should not have ketones in the urine. The 15 mg/dl corresponds to "small" ketones. Sometimes urine will show trace (5 mg/dl) and that is OK. What does you vet say about the "small" ketone reading? Have you looks at:

Re: urine pH 8.0 vet said he's not worried but i always wor

I asked my Vet about the ketones and about the pH and he said there is nothing to worry about regarding the urine. He said all cats urine changes from time to time. The
ketone reading was 30mg/dl in Jan. of this year.

Fluffy is not active like he used to be. I never can tell if it is due to pain from his arthritis.
I give the buprenex every 12 hrs and have cut the dose to .1 and a half ml each time.
(also aspirin and adequin and cosequin)
He IS more active after the buprenex.

I have googled about ketones and pH and asked Vet lots of questions and he says urine ok.

What would YOU do if Fluffy were your cat?

Thank you

I would find a vet who quits saying that everything is okay, when obviously it is not! A cat lives in a very small pH range, I think between 6.0-7.0. Too much on either side is medically a problem. Now you take a cat that is throwing off ketones and they have a high pH, could be a problem but you need to take some of this in your hands. You need to be testing his ketones, using strips or a meter and you need to find a vet who realizes when a cats pH changes it means something and it's not good. Think of a bog, a place between salt water and freshwater .... the plants that live in the bog need a very precise pH, animals, bugs, etc. also. If more salt gets in or more fresh.... it kills off a lot of the bog because everything that lives there can only survive at a certain pH.

Sorry that got long. You need to find out why the high pH, why the ketones. Are you testing? what insulin are you using? If Fluffy were my cat I would find a vet to do the necessary things.

Urine pH is influenced by diet and is usually not a problem unless crystals/stones develop. A high pH (alkaline) tends to lead to struvite crystals when a low pH (acid) tends to lead to oxalate crystals. With a sign of crystals I am not really concerned about the pH. However, the ketones bother me.

Thank you Larry and Nancy and Payne.
I forgot to mention that Fluffy is not Diabetic.

What tests should i make sure that Fluffy gets to find out what is wrong with him?
All his bloodwork was normal in Jan. this year. The T4 was 2.8(borderline high)

Thanks so much!

Larry i am feeding Fluffy fancy feast chunky chicken feast.
Sometimes he gets into Smokie's chicken and tuna(which is the only thing she will eat)
I give him a can of ff chicken and gravey every third day so i can be sure he has something in his stomach before giving the aspirin. I had been giving him a few pieces of ff dry to get him up on the table so that i could give the medicine i have to syringe but i stopped that a few days ago .
