I woke up to urine everywhere!! My entire house smells like cat urine.... this is so frustrating! I know it's because she doesn't feel well but it is so hard to deal with!

If this is atypical of your kitty, I would make a vet appointment. There may be a urinary track infection or some other issue besides diabetes going on. If it is the diabetes, you may need to set up extra litter boxes until the diabetes is under better control.

Thanks! I have 2 urine samples I collected off my floor and they are to go to the vets today. Of course though, it is a blizzard in my area right now!

I brought her litter box out into the open so she could see it and access it very easily but she refuses to use it.

I will see about setting up more.

Having the vet draw urine directly from Maggie's bladder will give you a more accurate result...although with the blizzard, it doesn't sound like heading out right now is ideal! If they don't feel well and/or associate the litter box with that, it certainly can cause the aversion.

Have you tried Cat Attract litter? I've heard that works really well. Have you recently switched litters? If you have, that may be an issue...kitties can be fussy about such things. Or, if she has neuropathy, the type of litter you are currently using may be bothering her feet.

And yes, at least for now, setting up several boxes around the house may help, too.

Oh no, sorry to hear that! I sure hope it's a simple fix, but in the meantime extra boxes and yes, even a few extra kisses .. poor baby, sounds like she just doesn't feel very well ...

Amber.........it's normal and Davidson did the same and I equated it to something else since I had no idea of the FD symptoms......I have 5 litter boxes and if you change litter and they don't like it they pee and poop else where. As well, since Maggie has diabetes she pees tons and if the litter box is not clean she will pee all over the place. That's a sign of the problem which is why it's important to get her regulated on the insulin as it will start to work in a couple days. You need to take blood tests so that people here see what is going on and may tell you to increase the insulin dose if they see your numbers and see it's not working. It's stopped the big snow here and you are only 5 min away and should be able to get to Dr. Gill........but understand if you can't make it. Not sure if you got your SS going, but if not then just post all your test results in a thread here and people will look at them. Don't get discouraged - we have all been through it and Maggie will get better once the insulin starts to work!!

You can also get Cat Attract as a sprinkle add-on to your own litter. And you may need to do something with your floors... with Willie, if he could smell urine in a given spot, he would go back to that spot to pee. Once I got the scent out, he would go back to the box. I know you mentioned you have hardwoods... trying to remember which products I used. I know Biokleen's Bac-Out is a natural product that is fairly gentle and has a lovely lime scent.

If you can get her to use one, the Tidy Cats Breeze systems may be worth a look... the "litter" pellets sit above a tray, and the urine goes down into the tray that is lined with an absorbent pad. When Willie's urine issues were at their peak, he would urinate so much that the litter couldn't clump properly... it would either pool or turn into sludge. The Breeze box helped a great deal.

Well don't bother with other products. Get Natures Miracle with a big yellow ribbon that says "Urine destroyer" on it to get rid of the smell and the pee. Petsmart has it.

I did get to the vets this morning for Maggie's fluids. I was able to bring two urine samples and they both tested free of any sign of infection, although there was some glucose in the urine. Dr. Gill says this is a good sign that her kidneys are processing the urine so hopefully in the next few weeks we will know better. She is going back tomorrow for fluids again and I am going to try to get another urine sample.

I am heading to the pet store after work today and will be on the hunt for the products you have suggested and give that a try!!

Thanks again for the help!

Amber..........if you have problems at the pet store call me as I bought some stuff too. Go to Petcetera and use my name Shawna Aron and get my discount (they do it for my friends) if you don't have time to fill out your own loyalty card. There is also a Petsmart across the highway by Walmart - use my name there too..........just say you forgot your card.

The stuff in Canada I bought was called Hagen Indoor Repellent for cats - don'[t get the dog stuff even if it's cheaper as not strong enuf.
