Re: Urgently pls help with dose, AMBG 202

I don't know about being bust- but is there any chance that he got into any "forbidden" food or anything else that could have raised his number?

Re: Urgently pls help with dose, AMBG 202

Nope, forbidden food has left the building, he was really hungry last night though, and because we had to go out I wasn't controlling the small meals so much, he might have eaten his and his brothers.

Re: Urgently pls help with dose, AMBG 202

I have heard that the ambg are usually the first to return to the low numbers. Your other numbers so far off the juice have been good. If it was me - I'd see how his numbers do a few hours after eating - if his pancreas is kicking in it should lower these numbers. BUT - I've never had the experience of going OTJ - so I'd definately see what the others have to say. You could always wait til tonight - see if it is a pattern, see if the numbers do come down after eating......

Re: Urgently pls help with dose, AMBG 202

Qualifier- I'm NOT an expert.

But, from what I've read, I'd feed breakfast as usual, then test in 2 to 3 hours (3 usually). If his #s go down, his pancreas has responded to the food. If not, then I'd lean more towards bust.

Re: Urgently pls help with dose, AMBG 202

what they said. feed a small meal and test in 3-4 hours to see if the number came down. Let's try this today and look at it again at PMBG time to see if insulin is needed. Some cats bounce around quite a bit on their trial so you don't want to react to one number.

Aaargh...okay will re test in +3 (thank goodness it's Saturday).

Just so I have the reference, how big is a "small" meal and how often should they be fed.
Due to time difference can I ask this upfront while I have eyes here:

Must he drop to normal at +3 for Mr. P to be working, if not what dose should I look at for tomight?

Sandra sent a PM (no doubt 'cause she saw me surfing around in LL):

I just need urgent advice. MAx BG was 202 this AM, so trial is a bust. What dose do I give him???Please help.

This is just one number and you don't know what's contributing to it. Before you reach for the syringe, do a food challenge. Feed Max and test in 3 or so hours. See if he brings his numbers down.

You don't know if he ate something HC, got really scared/stressed/spooked, etc. Right now, it's just one number and you don't want to over react. You can always pick up a syringe in 12 hours if Max's numbers stay high. Get at least 2 tests this cycle if you can so you can see what's going on. If his numbers stay high, we just need to give his pancreas some additional support. One step at a time and no cause for panic.

Not necessarily. Some cats take longer than 3 hours to drop, especially when they are newly OTJ. Lucy took 4 hours at first. We're looking for trends, not at single numbers. Post your numbers when you get them. Is your PMBG time 12 hours from now? If so, there should be lots of people around then because it will be Saturday afternoon here.

If you do need to restart, I would probably go to the 0.25 that was working well. But don't do it yet, let's give him a little time to see if he can work it out. We don't delay too long, but at least this cycle.

A mini-meal is about 1/4 of what you would ordinarily feed in a cycle. You can space this out throughout the day up to the last mini-meal at +9. Obviously, this is harder if you work and I know you said it's close to impossible to get a timed feeder.

See if Max is on his way down by +3. Like I said in my last post, get another test in and definitely feed again at +8 or +9 so if his pancreas is working, it will bring numbers further down by PMPS.

Thanks so much for the replies:

Okay here is the plan....

Just looked at what I have to do today

I'll test him at 3.5 and 5.5 He seems to come down later with the food test, with insulin he peaks earlier. Do I need to test him anymore between +5.5 and PMBG? Will post all the numbers later and we can make a call.

Thanks again

GOOD LUCK TODAY! Dont panic--What Sienne said--It's just one number--Is insulin fresh? got into any hc foods?
Hope Max comes down today-Paws & fingers crossed!

Did anyone mention sick or a bug or a tooth or some other issue?
Is he acting differently in any ways?
What sorts of things could bring up the BG high ?

Hey hi - I was gonna add, Luna went almost to 200 one time on his trial, due to not feeling too good, when he was ready (about a few hours) he ate and things came back down. Hairballs, tummy ache can spike up the bg a bit in some kitties, u got good feedback overnite, hope he's doing better!
Good luck!! Go Super Max!!

Take a peek at Maui's ss. In her first trial she spiked up and while yes, she brought herself down, she couldn't maintain the lower numbers, so we aborted the trial and used a drop of insulin, then tried again.

Her spike was caused by my negligence of leaving dry food out for her to eat. That was the last time anyone got dry food in this house.

And yes, I freaked when I saw her yellow number. But like everyone said, I also waited to see if she could fix this herself and after another cycle, we decided to restart the juice. It's not a big deal, but this shows why we do the 14 day trial. To find out if the cat can maintain the Bg's.

Good find, keep the insulin in the fridge and let's cross our fingers that the rest of the today's numbers come down nicely.
