Urgent - Obstepation / Megacolon Help Needed

Angel didn't make it home today. Checked in a couple times through the day and the colon had still not been emptied. Vet called at 5 (closing time), and said that things were going well, just very slow and they needed more time. That's ok, the important thing is he's coming home alive -- today was the day I had chosen for his euthanasia.

Between you and me... I think they fell in love with him and wanted him around for another day.

Will post again tomorrow.

I am so very, very happy to hear your news, Larry. Saoirse and myself didn't have a great week, but hearing the wonderful, wonderful news about Angel has really lifted my spirits, too. :)

Hi Larry,

I had a kitty with MegaColon last year. I found a Yahoo group that was totally dedicated to the problem and Mirilax was my salvation. My vet had never heard of using it! I recommend looking into that group. It was tremendously helpful. FELINE_MEGACOLON@yahoogroups.com

There is a lot a knowledge there about timing of feeding, type of food and other presciption motility drugs that can be a huge help. In the end my kitty had kidney failure but the drugs and the mirilax made him feel much better in the meantime.
 
Angel came home with me at 5:30 Saturday with an empty colon and a new lease on life. Still not acting normal, but he's been through a lot and I hope that he'll settle back in and return to normal. As the euphoria of this sudden save begins to dissipate, though, the reality of the situation is settling in: He's still a cat with a very serious health problem compounded even further by the pelvic injury from long ago. Simply put, he's still fighting an uphill battle. We'll take it one day at a time, though, and see how far we can run with it. The next week is pretty critical, as it's imperative that I can get some stool softeners that will work to keep things moving through the colon.

What does Codladh Sámh mean? Sorry you had a rough week and hope that next week is better.

Thanks for the tip, Chris, I will definitely join that group.

Please keep the prayers coming, as there's still a long way to go. I will continue to post so Angel's fan club can stay abreast of his progress :smuggrin:

You've both come through such a difficult time, Larry.

I know that it will now be necessary to find ways to manage Angel's condition.
The group that Chris linked to looks like it could be a very useful resource.

And we'll all be cheering you on every step of the way, and helping in any way we can.

Hi Larry, Great to know he has a clean colon. I strongly urge you to look into the other group that focuses on MegaColon. IMHO, Mirilax on board will help greatly but you must have an empty colon or a good history of BM before you start him on it - DO NOT give it if he's got a full belly without consulting the message board. I used chicken juice to dissolve it in. Feed it first then wait about 30 minutes before food (if I recall correctly)...There is also a lot of info on diets which can be overwhelming. I used a high fiber prescription diet but hoped to transition to a low residue high protein one. I had trouble finding something my kitty would like and the high fiber was working.
 
Angel had a good day today. Acting like normal again and also eating, although his consumption is still less than preproblem levels, but I'm not worried about that. Passed some soft stool, almost diarrhea, which I was thrilled to see because it means things are moving through the colon and his damaged rectal canal. Will need to dial in the diet and medication as we move forward, but I can handle that. It's so good to have him home. My family is whole again.

Right now I'm finishing up the lactulose I have on hand, then will switch over to the Miralax. Also getting as much fiber into him as possible, as long as he continues to eat, that will be no problem.

I have read the Feline Constipation webpage very thoroughly, extremely helpful, thanks for the tip.

I slept very well last night, believe me. Codladh Sámh to you also.

Squidgy stools. Yay! What a great status update, Larry. I'm thrilled for you both that you're tucked up safe at home, together again. :)

I'm also very pleased to hear that you have managed to get some much-needed, refreshing sleep.

More diarrhea today, so at least something is moving through the system and coming out the other end. I'm going to take him back for a check-up next week and have them feel his colon to see if any new blockages are forming. Right now things are on auto pilot, will post again when there's something new to report. he acts totally normal - just like nothing ever happened. Thanks again and keeps the prayers coming - maybe we really are going to pull this off.
 
An amazing day for Angel today. I have been giving him Lactulose twice a day to soften the stool, but since he has been having diarrhea I cut the dose in half yesterday. Isolated him today while at work and came home to perfectly formed stool and no diarrhea whatsoever. He's eating, drinking and acting 100% normal at this point. It takes my breath away to think that a week ago yesterday I was planning his euthanasia. I realize he's still a sick cat, but what an amazing turnaround. The power of prayer and positive thoughts.
 
Double yay for the perfectly formed poo! This is so amazing and wonderful news. You're finding out what works for Angel with the Lactulose and cutting down the dose. So glad he's feeling good. and eating. Continued vines and prayers for Angel.
