Hey, i woudl've been posting and interacting all day had I realized I had to actually search the PZI board. I have a link in my profile but it only went to the list of everyone on it....... i'm NOT computer savvy!

So, my vet admitted to me Junior is his first sugar cat. The clinic has others (and many other vets), no one home tests and everything is just being done "by the book". He thinks it's totally cool how i've gone about this. I think i'm teaching him at this point! How often are all of you checking in with your vets? What should I be doing to keep him well informed and make sure if something goes bad, he's prepared?

So far i've dropped off 2 sets of notes with Junior's numbers and questions. He gets right back to me with good answers. He thinks the dose should be 2 units. I've been getting ALL info from you guys and sorta forgot about the vet! Monday i'm dropping off the spreadsheet for him. Wonder what he'll think!

Please check out Junior's ss if you get a sec. We had the best day ever so far :)

side note, our civvie Johnny cat was recently diagnosed with herpes. Guess what, first one for the clinic!

Hi!
I just checked Junior's SS.

OK, if I was your vet, and I was thinking "2 units", this is what I would notice:

Your PS readings have come down gradually (except for tonight's PMPS) on doses less than 2 units. You have had to skip a shot after a dose of 1.75 on a red AMPS a few days ago, and his current AMPS numbers are much lower than that one was.
He's gone down into green numbers at least 3 times in the past ten days on doses of less than 2 units.
But today's daytime cycle is the clincher....
He dropped into "normal non-diabetes type numbers" for three hours of his cycle on a dose of 1.5. The numbers were low enough to cause some reaction from his liver, which then boosted his BG numbers up to their highest levels in a week for tonight's shot.

If we understand this disease, today's cycle indicates that a slight reduction in dose would be the way to go, and not an increase to 2 units.
SO when your vet looks at this on Monday, I am guessing you have plenty of data collected already that says "The right dose is something less than 1.5 units", and he'll rethink the dose he's recommending.

Your spreadsheet looks really good! I'm thinking maybe 1.25 units might be suggested by today's numbers....
What do others think?

I used to write all Bob's numbers down on a handmade "spreadsheet" and fax them to my vet every week to ten days. She would look it over, and call me the next day to discuss the next steps in his treatment. She also gave me her cell number and told me to call her any time day or night if I had any questions or problems. She had treated many diabetics in her 30 years of practice, but Bob was still a "one of a kind" case for her, so we both learned a lot together. I love my vet!

It is great that your vet not only admits the lack of experience, but is also willing to work closely with you on this. You are one of the "lucky ones" like I was.

Thanks Carl. Between the +10 and +11 we had one hell of a thunder storm. Going to put that in the notes. Shooting now, decreasing just a tad

I think a tad below 1.5 also. Glad you have a vet who is willing to learn along with you. You were much luckier with your vet than Charley's Mom today. Any chance you live near her in Florida?

First, the U40 syringes only have 1 unit increments. I'm never 100% sure how much i'm giving in between. Went to "down" the syringe i had loaded, forgot to put the bottle of insulin back on and lost that one!

I read Charlie's post and am so upset about it. I'm still trying to figure out it my vet is working with me or glad he's not doing all the work. He's young, grew up at the clinic, his father owns it and has recently retired.

I wish I lived near all of you, maybe we should start a commune!!!!!

Hey, doesn't Denise live in New Jersey? That's where you are, right? Oh, please tell me you aren't a Yankee fan?

If your vet has email, you don't need to keep taking him your spreadsheet.
Instead, copy/paste the link to your spreadsheet into an email to your vet, then tell your vet to be welcomt to look at Junior's sheet any time at all.

Aww guys, thanks for keeping me in your thoughts. I'm heading to bed now. What this vet doesn't know is I just tested tonight for my next belt in tae kwon do. I'm going to have sweet dreams of different ways I can use his Alphatrak as a sparring weapon. ;). I have to laugh at this situation now. He is just so unreasonable.
