I took her in at 8:00 this morning so they could run a curve and test her urine. When I tested her before she ate this morning, she was at 263. By the time the vet tested her at 8:30 she rang in with a whopping 442. She ran mid 400s throughout the day. She also held her urine until after 3:00, then someone picked her up and she just let it fly. Such a charming girl. :shock: Dr. K was impressed with the charts I brought with me and we agreed that I'll run a curve here at home on the 21st and fax it in to her. We increased her dosage from 1 until twice a day to 1.5 units, twice a day. We don't know if the huge difference in numbers is due to a massive stress spike or if our meters read that drastically different. I use a Relion Micro and they use a One Touch Ultra2. The good news is that the bladder infection is gone.

Ok, before she ate this evening she was 332, +3 from the shot she was 266 and +5 she was 176, +6.5 she's 164.

Is that safe?

Fantastic news about your vet being on board with home testing! Woohoo!

It is entirely possible Ruby tested high today from stress. Doing a curve at home will give you more realistic numbers. :smile:

Good news on the bladder infection too! :smile:

Thanks! Other than her making such a mess on the techs, I'm happy with how the day went.

Do you think you could do the curve at home before raising the dose? Just my thought that she might be that much higher because of the vet testing. Better safe than sorry.

I've run some "mini" curves over the past couple of weeks and she averages in the high 200/low 300 range, which is too high anyway.
I took the past 6 days worth of charts I've kept to the vet with me.

How about 1.25? Sorry but my Bean dropped alot on a .5 and quite a bit on .25. imo

I agree with oh bell. Raising .25 is a safer option than raising by .5. You can always add more in a few cycles if the numbers warrant.

I'll have to keep a close eye on her tonight because I already gave her 1.5.

we start treating for hypoglycemia when they drop below 50. the 40's are a safety zone - we like kitties on insulin to stay above 50. hypoglycemia can begin below 40, anything less than 30 is becoming a crisis and you would administer karo syrup or honey right away.

a non-diabetic cat's numbers will run between low 40's and 120ish.

so your numbers today look really great. no worries.
 
Thanks! I'm guessing I won't sleep that great over the next few hours anyway so I'll probably get up before too long and test her again.
 
i hear ya! when punkin was first diagnosed i thought i would never sleep again. but i keep waking up in the morning and he's still alive, so i've started to breathe again! :-D

it gets better - it really does. i think you're ok going to bed - that's my 2 cents worth! :YMHUG:
 
I did get some sleep. I just tested her again and she's at 140. I'm concerned with how low she went in the past few hours.
I'm going to test her again, after she eats a good breakfast, before I shoot.
 
This is how it went down....

332 at time of shot
266 +3
176 +5
164 +6
140 +10-ish

That seems like a huge drop really fast. I fed her right after the 140 reading. About 2 hours after that (with no shot) she was at 176.

If I gave her another 1.5 units this morning would she drop as fast and far as she did last night? If so, she'd completely crash. I held off on the shot because she's going to alone most of the day today and I'm afraid of that.

This whole thing is so confusing and scary. If you have to choose between too low or too high, you go for high, right?
 
Usually, if under 200, no shot and yes, too high is MUCH better....once it is in the kittie, you can remove.... as you well know...

She was also a little sluggish this morning...another reason I hesitated on the shot.

I feel really lousy testing her because she was poked and prodded so much at the vet yesterday and then by me last night and this morning. :sad:
 
Poking seems mean, but if you hadn't gotten that 140 this am and had just shot 1.5, she would be heading into dangerous territory today.

Skipping the shot will probably mean she is high tonight. But it will be because she has gone 24 hours without a shot, so don't over react with a higher dose. The 140 this am suggests that 1.5 is too much. Ideally you want a number am and pm that you can shoot, and a smile curve - not a surf into lower numbers at the end of the cycle.

If I were you, I would try 1.25 (can you do that - do you have U100s and the conversion chart or can you try to eyeball it with the U40s?). One way to try that kind of dose with the U40s is to experiment between one and 1.5 with water in the syringe. When you find a place you think is about right, use a permanent marker or piece of tape to mark it. Then use that syringe as a model when you are dosing. Certainly not ideal but about all you can try until you get the u100s.
 
I have the U40's. I can eyeball it.
I am glad I decided to not give her the shot this morning.

I also still use the u40 syringes and have to eyeball doses. Honey laughs at me, watching me turn the syringe this way and that, marking off the different doses and comparing my marked syringe with the shot syringes. :-D

Last night wasn't a good one. Thank goodness Sue was around to walk me thru it. She kept me down to a mild panic rather than a full-on major panic.
