Hopefully he will get to come home today. My plan for him is to do as we did for Bobbie. Test him 4 times a day for 2 weeks and get an accurrate reading of his blood sugars. If he needs to be on insulin , I plan to ask here and get him what y'all reccommend.

I don't know what to do when we first come home if the vet reccommends shots now. Should I keep him on humulin(what the vet uses) till we do the 2 weeks of testing? I honestly can't afford to buy the expensive insulin on top of his hospital stay only to have to ( hopefully) discontinue it once we get him on a wet only diet and home and well.

I would really appreciate your advice on how to handle these first couple of weeks.

Re: ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

You are planning on testing as soon as he comes home right? Could you not hold off on the humulin for a bit and do your testing? Perhaps if he needs insulin, you could go to the supply closet and see if there is anyone selling a different kind???
Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going?

Re: ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

That is what I am wondering- if it will be ok to hold off insulin(providing his numbers aren't astronomically high), till we can beging the testing and new diet. I will start both as soon as he comes home.

I do have a vial of opened humulin in the fridge left over from Bobbie and plenty of syringes too. I read that it will be okay a bit longer than the expiration date.

Re: ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

Update- he still has his catheter. vet doesn't want to pull it too soon.I agree. his numbers haven't been too high. he only got one shot yesterday, none today so far! :-D I'm to check back this afternoon.

Re: ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

Afternoon update- vet is removing the catheter and he will spend Tuesday with them to monitor the bladder situation. He gets to come home Wed if that is good and he is able to pass urine okay.

Great sugar news- He hasn't had insulin since Sunday morning! He has been under 200 at each check yesterday and today! :-D

Good news indeed! What are they feeding him?

Re: UPDATED ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

I had so many other questions that I didn't think to ask. When he comes home he'll get Friskies classic Pate- turkey. Thats what got his sister OTJ.

I started the others on all canned only today. The others were getting dry. Not anymore, they will all be canned only from now on.

Re: UPDATED ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

Today's update is- good numbers( I had a receptionist on the phone as his vet was off today) and if he has a good night tonight he comes home tomorrow. :-D

Re: UPDATED Wed Eve ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

We got him home about lunchtime today. He acts like he is feeling better but not up to par yet. He's been under 200 since Sunday so no shots since then.

he was sent home with RX food for 10 days for the UTI after that he'll be canned only with the friskies- I've already got the rest of the gang eating canned only...wow, I can see a difference in the litterboxes already!

At this point i'm more worried about the UTI than his sugar. He still isn't having his normal output of urine but he isn't eating and drinking back to normal just yet. having to keep him alone to monitor the litterbox and he isn't thrilled about that, either.

Thanks again for the support and hugs! You guys are great!

Re: UPDATED Wed Eve ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insulin

Soo glad you have your baby home....hopefully he will peeee and let you get that ketone test and be able to join the crowd.
I assume you are testing at home?? I thought you were going to??
Welcome home Judah and keep up with those lower numbers! :thumbup

Re: UPDATED Thur Eve ????s About Judah's Home Care & Insuli

Well, that didn't last long. He stopped going last night. I hovered all day and all though he was eating he was obviously not up to par. He never used the litter box, so off we went to the vet. He took anx-ray- thank goodness it was clear. so he is staying till at least Sat. with a catheter.....

I'm really hoping that when we get him home and on his new diet he won't contiune to have these UTIs.

Never even got a chance to home test him...that was planned for tonight since he was checked before he left yesterday.
