HI everyone! Still trying to make the boards a routine visit for me.

the most awesome news I could have hoped for: After a whopping "two" Lantus injections, Sab's numbers were running borderline, so on Feb 22nd the vet took him off it! Going forward the plan was to check his sugar once a day on a curve. That was the plan... but you know how the best-laid plans are when you're starting a new routine. I've not been faithful in checking him every day. Sidetracked with my own health & the death of one of the gerbils. I know, no excuses!

Today's supper was the first time I remembered to check his sugar before a meal since stopping insulin. It was 67. He was asymptomatic, but I wanted to go over procedure with the vet. Naturally, the office had just shut off the phones, so I called the emergency clinic. One of the techs there was extremely helpful. Since Sab is asymptomatic, and was harassing me for supper anyway, she advised me to feed him & recheck in 4 hours. I plan on checking in 2 hours and 4 hours, since obviously I need a better idea of his curve. (He is being fed Evo 95 wet food.)

Today was also first time I tested on one of his paw pads. He was not impressed and I've got a scratched up hand to show for it. I'm just finding it difficult to get enough blood out of his ears. Squeezing & poking them have made them blotchy & they aren't translucent anymore. Am I the only one who finds this disconcerting? Either way, I'm having to use at least 3 test strips per reading. In this respect, I'm not impressed with the Bayer Contour meter. (I use a Freestyle Freedom Lite & it uses almost no blood at all. Much easier!)

Congrats on the OTJ!!!

67 is actually not a low number, it is a perfectly beautiful BG number  . Non-diabetic cats range from 40-120 normally. If you are not shooting insulin, your kitty is not at risk for a hypo incident (except in very rare cases) so no worries if you test your OTJ kitty and see a number in the 60s. Give lots of chin scratches, treats, and say good kitty!

Hi Sabsmom -

Grayson doesn't like to bleed much either. We have a ReliOn meter from Walmart - which is good as I've gone through quite a few test strips. I can pick them up 24-7, they only cost $36/100, and they don't require a lot of blood.

Never tried on the paw - some people love it. I think Grayson would do the same as yours. It's taken a while, but his ears have improved. Sometimes I have to do two pokes to get enough blood for a test. Meanwhile I've practised on my other cats and they bleed much easier. ECID!

Some people have better luck on the upper (pointy) part of the ear. I succeeded once inside about 3/8" from the edge, but I typically poke him near the bottom & directly above the little extra flap.

It will get better! Good luck!

I have a comment on the meters; I would NOT trust any Freestyle meter, especially the Lite ones as they have been proven to be wrong, giving artificial readings. Some people have been fooled into thinking the BG numbers are good when in fact they were not. I went so far as to formally advise Abbott that they should be checking into the reliability of their meters before some people are ill when they rely on the readings. Stick with the Bayer meter.

How have you been poking for blood? In the beginning, some cats' ears are a bit stubborn with bleeding, but the ears 'learn' to bleed. One of my cats gives better drops on the outside of the ear but the other one is better on the underside.
Are you using the lancet device or poking freehand with a lancet? If you are poking freehand, it is very hit or miss and would hurt more as your manual poke is nowhere near as quick as the device. If you are using the device and not getting enough blood, you can try adjusting the depth of the poke on the lancet device.

For the food test, test a bit earlier after the food.... by 4hrs, all the reaction to the foods would be worn off, so test and feed, then retest in an hour or two..

The 67 is a pretty nice number; one of my civvies has tested as low as 42, and cats won't go hypo on no insulin, so don't worry about that.

If it's possible for you to try a larger lancet (28 or 26g?), at least at first, that might help you get more blood. That probably made the most difference of all the stuff we tried.

Saima hated testing on the paw pad too. I tried it once or twice to give her ears a break, but she would growl and pull her foot away. I think the ear is less painful for a lot of cats.

slow in getting back to the boards...

Sab continues to do well! He's getting better at evading the lancets pricks but I warned him that this is one battle he will not win. We're still insulin free!

He has the Bayer Contour USB monitor. I LOVE IT. I'm diabetic myself; wish I had this meter! My diabetes has been changing this winter & my sugars have been off. Its kept me off the boards b/c I've felt crummy.

Thanks for all the helpful comments!!!!
