Update on Siamese babies that went to Colorado Rescue

below is an update from Deb Shrieves, Colorado Siamese Rescue and foster for the 6 siamese rescued in Phoenix & went to Colorado.

sadly, 2 have crossed the Rainbow bridge rb_icon .

Hi Everyone,

Wanted to pop in and let everyone know that the remaining "Star" kittens will be going to the vet for their spays this coming Monday the 29th. While there, all but Star Shine will undergo eye surgery. Moon Star will have both of her eyes removed as she does not see out of either and they both have glaucoma and they are enlarging. Dream Star will have one of her eyes removed as she does not see out of that eye and that eye has glaucoma and the eye is enlarging. Shooting Star will have her sockets cleaned out (her eyes enlarged and ruptured before she came into rescue, so she has little shriveled up eyes deep in her sockets) and then her eyes will be sewn shut so debris doesn't get in there. They will be staying overnight at the vet so they can have extra monitoring and pain management. They will most likely come home sometime on Tuesday if they are doing well.

Please sing for them and send up lots of healing energy for them so they come through the surgeries well and so that they heal well and don't come down with anything afterward. As you can probably imagine, I'm a very worried foster meowmy. They had such a rough start and have been so fragile and we lost 2 of them and I hate for them to have to undergo yet another stress but they need to be spayed and they really need to have the eye surgery so I know its what is best for them but it doesn't keep me from worrying about them.

I still would like to slap the people who abandoned these precious souls in such poor condition. but want to hug their guardian angels in AZ & CO. wings_cat
 
Oh whew! When I started reading your post, I was afraid two MORE passed! Glad the others are strong enough for surgery now. I'm upset that they can't keep their eyes. I was hoping some of them could have been saved. I know it won't matter to the kittens, and most likely will be less painful now. As far as I know, the runt that was kept here is still doing fine. I'll have to ask about his eyes, and warn Jamie, so she can warn her friend that took him. They'll have to make sure they keep an eye out for his eye health. Wonder if it was just the poor conditions they were in, or somewhat genetic. Guess we'll never know. Jamie's Serena passed though, from wet FIP too. So out of the 8 kittens, 3 have passed. I hope the rest go on to loving homes!

Will be praying they do great in surgery, and go on to loving homes. I think of them often!
 
Oh wow, lots of healing thoughts going out to those babies! I haven't seen the earlier part of this story but it touches my heart even more because it sounds like they have similar eye issues as our little Echo, the vet will be doing the same scoop and sew on his little eyes as soon as I can come up with the money to pay for the surgery. The eye specialist said Echo probably got an infection while his eyes were still sealed closed and it caused his eyeballs to shrink up and back into the sockets, so he's never had sight, but he is a foundling so we'll never know for sure. If they react like he has, you'll hardly even know they are blind =) Other than running into things and occasionally getting stuck, he gets around the house just fine and handles his 4 big brothers and sisters as well as our Great Dane with no problems.

I hope the kittens come through their surgeries with flying colors! Lots of healing vines for them!

last yr, 8 "meezers" deserted in AZ in poor shape. taken in & saved by friend of Feline Diabletes webber. 2 stayed in AZ, 6 got a a transport to to Rocky Mountain Siamese Rescue in CO. most had eye issues and in borderline health, but fun, fun kittens. 1 in AZ rb_icon . 2 in CO have rb_icon . so hoping the 4 sweet babes continue improve after their surgeries - getting them to the point to handle a spay is a major achievement. the RMSC medical fund is pretty depleted - thank goodness they have great vets.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, support and songs for these dear babies. You guys are the best and I appreciate you more than you all can know.

Wanted to pop on to let you know that I just talked to the vet it was a long surgery day. The last one to have surgery (Star Shine) was just waking up as we spoke. She said all came through the surgery well and that they appear to be doing well. She said she was very pleased with the enucleation (eye removal) surgeries as she said there was not a lot of blood loss and things closed up nicely.

They will stay at the vet overnight and through tomorrow morning. The vet will call me tomorrow with an update. They may come home tomorrow afternoon if the vet feels they are doing well and their pain is well managed. if they are having any complications or she feels they need more time on morphine then she will keep them longer.

Please continue to keep them in your thoughts as they recover.

Oh I'm so glad they made it through ok! Can't wait to see more pics on their website once they're back to foster & settled. They're doing an amazing job with them!

another update from Deb at RMSR - from about 24 hrs ago - Tues night.

The Star kittens are home from the vet and are settled in their room. They seem to be doing pretty well considering all they've been through in the last 24 hours. Star Shine is Ms. Energizer Bunny so she is kenneled so she won't climb and jump and mess up her stitches and also so she won't drive the others crazy trying to play. Shooting Star is kenneled because she was hissy with the other kittens moving around and we wanted her to be able to relax and rest. Moon Star and Dream Star have the run of their room (minus the cat tree that we moved out of the room so they won't be climbing and jumping and mess up their spay stitches). All have fentanyl pain patches and they had a convenia antibiotic injection today. They will go back in 2 weeks to have the eye stitches removed.

Deb would have 300 cats if she kept all she fell in love with - and none of these would be going anywhere! LOL Deb runs RMSR.

just found out that DreamStar is going to her furever home next wk! dancing_cat dancing_cat ! Since DreamStar is staying local to Denver, followup visit to the vet who did the surgery will will be happening - thus going home. I hope she doesn't miss her siblings too much.

comments from Deb at RMSR about these kitties when the eye specialist 1st saw them:
Both Moon Star and Shooting Star are completely blind. The eye specialist felt that they were exposed to the herpes virus at birth and that it had really taken hold before they ever opened their eyes and that by the time their eyes opened, they had no vision. Shooting Star's eyes ruptured and then atrophied, so when she arrived at RMSR she appeared to just have these big sockets with no eyes but the specialist said that way down in there were shriveled up eyes. Moon Star's eyes didn't rupture, so she came to us with eyes but her eyes had glaucoma in them and were enlarging by the day to the point where she couldn't close her eyelids and the specialist was concerned about them rupturing and we were concerned about the pain also. So when they went in for their spays, they both had eye surgery to remove their eyes and close the eye lids.

in spite of their circumstances, these kitties and playful and loving.

Update on Moon Star and Shooting Star After Suture Removal
I've gotten several emails and facebook messages today asking how the vet visit went so thought I'd pop in real quick and give everyone an update.

Moon Star and Shooting Star both went in for a post surgery check and eye suture removal today. The vet is very happy with their progress. Their eyes are healing up nicely.

Moon Star has an ear infection, so we got some medication for us to give her for the next 15 days, so hopefully we'll get that all cleared up in the next few weeks.
