Hi!

I know I’m upsetting Pudge with many ear pokes & wonder how much that raises his sugar, but warming the ear really helps!! Thanks.

Didn’t get 1/4/2012 AMBG (and not for lack of trying) & didn’t even try for his +6 BG, his PMBG was 401. I did shoot blindly his AM ProZinc at 1.2u and, then watched him like a hawk exhausting us both.

1/5/2012 AMBG 384 (with 6 pokes) 1.2u ProZinc, +6 183 (2 pokes) I don’t know how much insulin went in because Pudge moved and the needle came out with some wetness showing – I need to hold him more firmly. PMBG 336, +6 182.

1/6/2012 1.2u ProZinc AMBG 338, +5.5 119, PMBG 298

1/7/2012 1.4u ProZinc AMBG 366, +2 302, +7 180, PMBG 345

1/8/2012 1.4u ProZinc AMBG 324, +5.5 69 (yes, 69 it’s not a typo) +8 101, PMBG 321
Today, Pudge is washing more, playing more, chased his sister, started again to “loom” over his sisters when he wants them to move away from his chosen spot – he appears to be feeling better. All pokes were done by my daughter and on the first attempt!

Dear Sue, so sorry about not getting to the ss and ProZinc forum – will do both but right now I don’t know where my time goes. My old computer has certain issues. I’m exhausted but never give up and things are looking up!

With appreciation,
Sophie

The ear pokes are more of an annoyance than anything for many cats. It helps to give a low carb treat after testing, as a reward for putting up with it. After a while, your cat may come to you for testing - now, if I go in my downstairs bathroom, Spitzer is right there, hoping for goodies.

You can use a small amount of neosporin ointment with pain relief. Put a small amount on the area to be tested and wipe it in. Wait a few minutes, then wipe off any excess and test. The ointment will help bead up the blood, too.

Re: Update on Pudge + new question

Thank you BJM and Sue. I do use treats and the pain relief ointment. Pudge for now just dislikes all pokes, including injections. The only time he doesn't growl or move during pokes is when he's been asleep and is deeply relaxed (and has not moved from that position) for the poke or shot.

His AMBG was 314 today, though I messed up his ProZinc shot. Pudge moved and it was a wet shot. His +5 was 357. Then, my new question: I can easily move his insulin injection schedule forward by 4 hours so it would now be what used to be +8. Should I do this or should I stick with his original schedule? Which is better for Pudge? I have to say that I'm uncomfortable waiting for his original shot schedule. Thank you in advance. Sophie

Do you mean shooting early at +8? I wouldn't. All of us have done a fur shot or partial fur shot. It is too hard to be sure how much went in and what a new diabetic's bg levels will do. I would just chalk it up to a bum day and start again at +12.

Yes, that's what I mean, Sue. So glad you understand me so well! I'll stick with the original schedule. Thank you.
