Skipping a lot of details, I was able to talk to the person Pam who claimed the cat at the shelter. Seems Pam really did it for an elderly person Ann who'd had an amputation, so couldn't keep the cat any longer. Ann had sent him to a daughter of hers in my area who thought nothing of the cat going missing. At any rate, Pam was thrilled to get him back, We had a long talk about animal rescues, overpopulation etc.
Pam said she took him to the nursing home where Ann was rehabbing, The cat jumped on the bed, crawled under the covers with her and everyone in the room cried, as Ann had been dejected. (Ann never knew about his disappearance and adventure in the wilds-- ha). Pam will keep him indefinitely, along with horses, dogs, cats and a bird.

So a happy ending for all, but if he ever needs a new foster home, my hand has been raised. I like to think the spirit of my Joey led him to my house that day.
