Update on Lucky

Just wanted to update everyone on how Lucky is doing. She still is having great bg readings! I weighed her and she has actually gained 2lbs. She's only getting 2 cans a day. So not sure if I need to reduce to less food. She is about 16lbs. I've also given her a break from testing 2x a day. I test her in the am when her bg is usually higher. Most mornings it is between 81 and 85 where in the pm she's been around 71 and 76. This coming Wednesday will be her 14th day! crossing our fingers and paws!

How boney does she feel? You want to be able to very slightly feel the spine bumps and hip bumps, but there should be solid muscle along the spine and filling in around the hips.

What has the vet said is her ideal weight?

This body condition scoring chart may help you to see if her weight looks good. About 5 is normal, cats have a waist area just before the hips too. ;-)

Vet said she should be about 9lbs to no more than 10lbs so she needs to lose weight. like 6lbs. I was giving her about 3 cans a day though so now I have her down to two and will reweigh her next week to see if she's lost any.

Weight loss needs to be slow and steady. If you do it too fast in a cat, the fat released from storage may overwhelm and swell the liver - a condition called hepatic lipidosis. It can be fatal! Cat Info has a section on obesity and safe weight loss.
