Update on Hardey after the ultrasound - question on nausea?

Thank you to all the people who have posted well wishes and concern for my baby. He is eating today (more than I have seen him eat in a week) and I am cautiously relieved. For a quick review of the past few days:

Thursday - dental was scheduled, but cancelled when Hardey had lost another 1/2 pound in less than a week. Vet did not want to risk putting him under without being sure there wasn't an underlying problem. She did an Xray and found that his intestines were full of gas and thought there might be a blockage. At the end of the day, before I picked him up, she did another Xray to see if anything had moved and it had, but we still weren't sure what we were dealing with. She referred Hardey to a specialist for an ultrasound on Friday.

Friday - specialist did ultrasound and found most of the gas had passed, but his intestines were moving very slowly. No masses, but the lining was thicker than it should be. She believes it is either IBS or cancer. She recomended exploratory surgery, but didn't want to put him under until he had gained some weight and strength back. She put him on an appetite stimulant (mirtazapine) which did increase his appetite, but made him extremly agitated. I called her after hours (still in shock that a vet actually gave me her home phone number - WOW!) and she prescribed a counteragent (Cyproheptadine) to get the other out of his system. Luckily, this is also a stimulant and seems to be doing the trick. He has eaten 1/2 large can of albacore tuna in water, 1 small can of beef/beef broth baby food, 1 can of FF, and 1 large can of Friskies in the past 24 hours!

On Monday, I have a consult with my regular vet to look into some sort of medication for the IBS that is not a steroid. Fingers crossed it works. :)

I am writing this with such a heavy heart after reading and grieving with you all about Charlie and her family. Such a tragedy. I have been snuggling with my guy all day as I am sure you all are as well. Sending loving and healing vines to anyone who needs them.

Sending prayers you can get something from the vet that helps with the IBS and isn't a steroid.

Re: Update on Hardey after the ultrasound

Yay for eating! :-D :-D You might also ask about Cerenia. It's used for car sickness for dogs but you can give it to cats and it helps with motility. We started with shots, which are useful if the animal is vomiting. It also seemed to help Zener right away, like in an hour. But the needles are huge and the shots are expensive so we found pills and give him 1/4 of a 16 mg pill, 3 times per week. We also give him ondansetron for nausea, 1 mg twice a day. Karrie and Maverick insists you should give an anti-nausea drug whenever you give an appy stimulant. Karrie has been involved with the Feline Assisted Feeding group for quite a long time.

Recently, Claudia suggested squash and we think that has helped with his digestion too. We give 2 teaspoons a day and some people give 1 tablespoon. We use the baby food squash, no sugar or any other additives.

These are just some suggestions of things that have worked for us. I hope you find something that will work for your sweet boy. Sending tons of appy vines.

Re: Update on Hardey after the ultrasound

Was having such a good day today and then he decided to put his nose up at any type of cat food I gave him. I now have 4 cans open, including the one he devoured yesterday. The only thing he'll eat is the beef baby food I had left for after his dental that didn't happen. Even that didn't seem to be what he really wanted, but he did eat it with some coaxing. Maybe has an upset tummy too. I can ask the vet on Monday to prescribe something, but should I try the squash before then? I had read that canned pumpkin works too. I can run to the store if I know what to look for. What brands? Any help would be wonderful. I don't know if he's just full - he has eaten ALOT in the past 36 hours (and has been pooping too - sometimes diarrea and/or soft stools). How much should I give him if I do find it?

Re: Update on Hardey after the ultrasound - question on naus

I hope that Hardey will feel better and decide to eat tonight. The canned pumpkin that is recommended is plain pumpkin--not pumpkin pie filling. You can buy it in health food stores.
I 'm sorry that I can't help with the other meds, but you have received lots of good info.
Feel better, Hardey. Healing vines are on the way.

When I've given Furball canned pumpkin, I just bought the Kroger brand. Just make sure it is only pumpkin and no other ingredients. I mixed a teaspoon into her food.

Re: Update on Hardey after the ultrasound - question on naus

We use the baby food squash, Beechnut. Its a small bottle so easier to deal with. You can freeze the pumpkin in ice cube trays. Another thing we give Zener is Zantac, 1/8 of a 10 mg pill morning and night. It helps with acid tummy. Zantac is an alternative to Pepcid but has some motility properties. We give these meds in a pill pocket by Greenies. We use the duck and pea flavor, dog version. These don't have sugar but do have carbs so just slice off a tiny piece to wrap around the pill. Zener will eat these quite readily but some cats will figure out there is a pill and spit it out. I tell him "just swallow, don't chew". ;-)  Sending appy vines for Hardey. Not eating is the hardest thing to deal with.

Re: Update on Hardey after the ultrasound - question on naus

Thanks everyone. I found the yahoo group for feline assisted feedings. Tried to send a message, but I don't think I did it right. I'll keep trying.... I did find general information to at least get me started. :)

Looks like I'm off to the store tomorrow...
