Update on Eve

We had a wild night on Friday. Eve tested at 73 for her PMPS so she did not get a shot. Her BG continued to drop and I was testing her every hour. At 1:00 AM I called the emergency vet and they told me to bring her in. They monitored her and at 2:00 AM her BG started to come up.

We brought her home Saturday morning and our instructions were to give 1/2 unit if she tested above 250. She has not done that yet so she has not had any insulin since her AM shot on Friday.

The only problem I'm having now is her diet. She is being finicky about food - she will eat a couple of bites but then I really have to coax her to eat and I know she's got to be hungry since she is only eating twice a day. She is getting Purina DM but I am wondering if I should try something else that is low carb? I hate to switch because she is doing so well. But I know she needs to eat.

thanks,
Jeanette

Is she licking her lips and staring at the food?

She could be nauseaus - 1/4 tablet of Pepcid AC (regular), given 20 -30 min before feeding may help.

2 days w/out food = vet visit due to risk of hepatic lipidosis.

Not doing that - she will eat a few bites but then stops. And if I coax she will eat a few more bites.

Jeanette,

If she keeps that up, picking at the food or not eating. I would take her back to the vet and have them run a pancreatitis test. There are varying degrees of it from mild to severe.

Jeanette,

As BJ said have you noticed her licking her lips? I would offer her any food at this point just to see if she will eat it. If she is not wanting to eat anything that's telling me she has upset tummy maybe which could be the start of pancreatitis.
Put out a couple different things and see if she will eat anything.
She had ketones before? I am not sure what the renal threshold is but do believe she is and has been below that. You said she has been under 250?

Terri

I called the vet hospital and as luck would have it her internist was in today and asked us to bring her in. She did some blood work and Evie's numbers look great.

She has been on amoxicillin for her UTI so they think that may be causing some nausea. She was close to being finished so they said to quit now and let's see if her appetite improves. They also gave her an anti-nausea shot.

This is her 3rd day under 250. Her last shot was Friday at 7 am.

Antibiotics like the Amoxicillin you are giving your kitty Eve can often suppress the appetite.

Many cats do not like the taste of the Purina DM after a while and refuse to eat it after the novelty of the liver flavor has worn off. You could feed any of the Fancy Feast classic pate or Friskies pate or Wellness grain-free foods. Lots of flavors to choose from to tempt her appetite.

This food chart lists most of the canned foods available in the US and Canada. Just pick one that is <10% carbs and try that. Most of the Fancy Feast pates are < 5% carbs, comparable to the carb content of the DM canned food.

Hope Eve feels better soon and starts eating more for you.

Thank you for asking. She is doing great. She has been OTJ for 14 days!!

She is eating much better and we are experimenting with different foods. I think she is growing tired of the Purina DM so we've been trying the low card Friskies and Fancy Feast.

That is fantastic news to hear! Congratulations, you two! :-D

Good luck on finding some more food and I bet your wallet is happy that Eve's grown tired of the Purina DM. My cats love their Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets. That's the majority of what I've been feeding them for the last year and no complaints so far!

Thank you! We are taking it day by day.

The pet food document is invaluable! I bought a few new low carb FF and Friskies flavors today and we are also trying some of the Purina One pates. She has gained a bit so I know she is not starving and I am still trying to determine just how much to feed her each day. She is not a super active cat due to her blindness, though she does get around quite well.

Jeanette,

Love Eve`s picture and I am so glad to hear she is OTJ. Its great to hear how well she is doing.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Tips to stay OTJ

We say a cat is in remission if the cat can maintain BG levels for 14 days between 40-120 with most of that spent under 100. However, please keep in mind that once a diabetic always a diabetic.

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.
