Update on Curt - He lost most of his teeth!!

Its been a few weeks since Curts OTJ day and I wanted to come by and see how all of the kitties were doing!! confused_cat Curt still is doing great OTJ, but last week he went in to the vet for a routine teeth cleaning - his vet said something about it possibly helping keep his BG down and keep him in remission. Well I guess when they went to do this, they found all of his front teeth were either loose, abscessed (sp?) or infected and that he was probably in a fair amount of dental pain. So they ended up having to pull all of his front teeth, top and bottom. :( He is a gumby Curt now!! Do you think this was caused by the diabetes? Or maybe it IS what caused him to get diabetes? The vet said as bad as his teeth were, it was probably pretty tough for him to eat as much as he needed being on a dry only diet back then. Just was curious. And also the medicine they gave him after the dental surgery has given him the runs pretty bad, and im worried he is getting dehydrated since he doesnt drink much water now that his BG is controlled. Should I be worried? He is still on full wet food diet. Would this be enough water to keep hydrated?

Bless his heart. Poor guy has been through so much lately. :YMHUG:
Are you adding water to his food. This will get water in him. Make the food soupy. It also will make it easier on him to eat.

As for the teeth & diabetes. Dental care is extremely important for the health of a cat. I believe his bad teeth could have caused his diabetes. I know of a member (Sev & Kitty) who's cat had bad teeth & had sky high BG. He changed vets got the BG under control. Had Kitties teeth clean & BAM went OTJ.

I hope Curts continues to get better everyday.

I do add some water, but if I add too much that little stinker for whatever reason wont eat it!! lol
Im glad they found it, he seems to feel even better now.. hopefully his runs clear up soon... im hoping its just the antibiotics. I was watching tv earlier and heard a cat go in the box, it was dark so i wasnt even sure which one. Then all of a sudden I hear this horrible wet fart noise lol so i get up and look and its Curt with explosive liquid poop going everywhere. What a mess :( But he seems to be feeling fantastic otherwise.
Ill never forget you guys, I usually lurk around the forums every other day or two, but since Im still so new at FD i dont have much advice to give other than the few things i learned in the month Curt was on insulin. Hows Baxter doing??

It's probably just the antibiotic. Look up this stuff...forti flora. It's a probiotic for cats. You might even be able to buy it from the vet. Amazon.com even sells it. It's suppose to help with diaheria.

Thanks for asking about Baxter he has been all over the map. He is starting to settle down....I hope...knock on wood.
PZI hasn't had a remission since Curts. The PZI family is long over do for a remission kitty. I see your name as the last one on the "Latest Remission" thread. I would love to have Baxters name under yours. Stop by PZI sometime. You don't have to give advice, just cheer us on. Put a cheerleader in a post. We always need encouragement. You are a remission story so you would bring inspiration to us.

HI Tom, I will keep my fingers crossed that Curt stays OTJ. You have to love those cute pink gums(I have a toothless cat myself). The diabetes could have contributed to Curt's dental problems or maybe not. Hard to say - cats are like people - some have better teeth then others. One thing is for sure - infected teeth push bacteria into the blood stream and it can cause a lot of organ damage so its better to get them out. Jan
 
Bandit has had to have all but his two lower canines pulled over the last few years...so I have nearly toothless cat as well! He does just fine--since he's on a canned diet only he has no problem eating. I give him Fancy Feast appetizers every now and then, too, and he manages to eat the shredded chicken/beef with no problem.

If Curt's tooth issues were caused by tooth resorption, than having all those pulled is not uncommon at all. If you have a cat with tooth resorption, chances are they are going to loose all their teeth eventually no matter how well you take care of them because it's a genetic problem. And it's really good that you had them pulled sooner than later, because they definitely contribute to the diabetes.

Bandit doesn't ever drink from his water dish, either--don't worry about it! If he's not drinking, that means he's hydrated just fine. Make sure he still has fresh water available to him, but I see Bandit drink out of his water dish MAYBE once or twice a month. If you're really concerned about getting more water into him, you could always get a pet fountain to encourage drinking--cats can't resist them.

It sounds like Curt is doing great!
 
Nomatter what it looks like your kitty must feel sooooo much better now without his sick teeth ! In 2 weeks my cat is going to the vet for the same reason and they ll have to extract at least two of her teeth. The vet told me that it is very frequent in old cat's to have teeth and gums problem unless they get a teeth check up atleast once a year! Which is not the case for most cats!
 
They didnt give him a pain reliever but hes eating like a horse. Almost twice the amount he was prior to the dental surgery. Tested his BG for the first time today since his OTJ party and he was at 75, great!!!! His runs werent as bad today, and it was the last dose of the antibiotics so ill see in the next few days if that is what caused it. I bet he feels so much better without the dental problems, I just feel bad he has no teeth :( I looked at his mouth earlier and his tongue was just kind of sliding out the side of his gums :/ Sad but he seems to feel great!!! Jenn, Ill visit PZI more often... I hope Baxter and more kitties get OTJ soon!!

Lots of exciting things going on over in PZI. Lots of kitties are having visits from Mr.P. There is one cat on count down right now. So exciting come check it! There is going to be a party soon!

Mocha had 8 teeth extracted on her dental (including upper canines) and one was already missing .. She does fine on her wet cat food .. Sometimes when she is bathing or taking a nap, her tongue hangs out of her mouth .. it is so funny!

I have a perpetual small-stream "drippy" running in the bathroom sink. There's a bowl next to it, but several of my guys prefer the moving water - whether they drink from the drip, or below the drip (baptism or face-washing!). I keep an eye on my water meter sometimes, as I previously had a runny toilet that ran up the bill. The amt of drip running doesn't even register on the meter. And if you're in a cold climate, it will help keep your pipes from freezing!

You should see how they congregate if I fail to turn it on! :lol:
