Ben is OFF INSULIN!!!! Took him to see the specialist this late morning AND he tested his BG at 100 with NO insulin for 4 days!! No more Lactulose!! The Miralax is working GREAT...he may even stop the Cisapride..will try 1 a day instead of 2-3....Vet agreed that low- carb, high protein diet is way to go..NO MORE HILL'S WD- bought some Wellness today and Ben has lost 3 pounds since Sat due to NO DRY FOODS!!! He is more alert since I stopped the insulin AND his back/ walking seems better..she says feeding both cats 5-6 SMALL meals a day is OK- that cats prefer more small meals given at intervals all day rather than 2 BIG meals a day..she was from Austria and when I told/ showed her all the info from this website, she said, "well, you certainly are well informed on nutrition!" That's because I spent the last 3 days reviewing all the data from Dr. Lisa & Binky"s pages- WONDERFUL info!!!!!!

I want to THANK EVERYBODY WHO HAS HELPED ME BY POSTING ON THIS BOARD AND OPENING MY EYES TO DIET & NUTRITION..She suggested Omega-3 fatty acids to help his arthritis, so I will add that...BTW- got the B-12 Vitamins today...anyone know if you sprinke it his food or other options? I dropped 7 pounds from all this anxiety the last 8 days...I want Ben at 16-18 lbs....Jerry at 15 lbs.....maybe I can eat & sleep again.....

Alan ....Drunk in Florida....

:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT Fantastic! What wonderful news.

You will know you have really come over to the dark side when you start approaching people at PetSmart urging them not to feed dry food.

Ben shouldnt lose weight that fast so just be careful! You may need to give him more canned food since it is less calorie dense due to the moisture content.

Ditto on the rate of weight loss. You may want to check some of the low carb kitten foods as they typically are calorie dense for growth.

Terrific!

You crush up the B-12 and mix into food

So just take the powder inside the capsule and sprinkle it on the food....just like cosequin.....Thanks!

yes, just sprinkle, mix into food and should be find. What kind did you buy? Taste it to see if it's fruity flavored, if so, Ben may not like it, if you got the one I suggested from vitacost, then it has no taste and just mix into food.

If the other cats eat it too, no biggie. They will pee out what their bodies don't utilize.

And great news on Ben.

Please do learn to home test, because things can happen and he could need insulin again, even if only for a short time. Illness, bad teeth, etc can be reasons for needing insulin.

If you learn to home test, you will be in a better position to gauge what's going on and if it's a blip or something that will require insulin.....

Glad you liked the vet, and that Ben is feeling/walking/pooping better.

Friskies may fit into your budget better over the long haul. Also, Friskies is available in more economical larger cans (they look like soup cans)

If your Methocobalamin is a sublingual tablet, you might want to split it in half, moisten it, and throw it into his mouth. It dissolves almost immediately, and is absorbed straight into the blood stream rather than fighting the stomach acids.

In the future, Be sure to be on the lookout for the signs of diabetes returning, which it can. (drinking a lot, peeing a lot, eating a lot, losing weight. Even better if you can test him yourself.

How did the vet feel about home testing? Its really so easy and you already have the stuff...

That's great news!!! My kitty went off insulin about a month ago, the first couple days of not giving shots felt kinda weird, like I was forgetting to do something. :) I still test him every couple days just to make sure he's still on track, tonights # was 78.
