I just wanted to give everyone a quick update on Baxter. Many of you have read my threads & even taken your time to reply. Which I am so greatful for!

Baxter numbers have been high the last few days. All do to food issues. I have been struggling with foods & have been considering raw diet. I did have him off insulin, but when the numbers begin to rise I started to micro dose. I spoke with the vet today, he told me NOT to micro dose. Even if he was in the 200's. He only wanted me to admin .50 if Baxter begin to reach the 300's. He said he would like to see how Baxter does on his own. How damaging is this to the pancreas? I feel like the pancreas is in such a delicate state right now. Especially since I had Baxter so close.....3 weeks into OTJ trial. I feel like we came so far, but we are right back at the beginning. The food issues, the high numbers & all the testing again. Is it possible once I find the right food again I could get Baxter to another OTJ trial? He was on insulin for 3 weeks before the trial.

Thank you,
Jenn & Baxter

Hi Jenn,

Would you consider posting on the PZI forum? It is not as busy as Health generally (busiest in am and pm) but you will not get much dose advice on Health. Few people on PZI post on both forums. We have a number of people mini dosing on PZI so you can get advice.

It seems like you have two issues - possible carb issues and mini dosing. Is there any chance of an infection? That can raise bg levels too. I would disagree with your vet. I think it is best to try for OTJ if possible. Here is some advice on mini dosing, but I would suggest you do it with guidance.

When your cat is consistently in numbers too low to shoot at shot time and in numbers in the 100 range and below during the cycle, you can consider micro dosing. This process should be guided on the forum by experienced members and will require more frequent testing.

You may be shooting at times other than the 12/12 schedule, when the blood glucose levels rise enough to require a small dose of insulin. You will need to pick a number somewhere near the 150 range at which you will plan to shoot, being sure that the number is indeed rising. The dose at these low numbers will vary with each cat and its patterns, so advice should be solicited. But you may be considering doses below .25 and even considering a “drop” of insulin. At this point, U100 needles and the conversion chart will be necessary.

It is important during this period to offer small frequent meals. You may want to experiment with the lowest carb foods to help bring down the numbers, staying away from seafood more than once or twice a week.

why don't you give fancy feast a try? I was trying to feed all the high quality foods I can find, but you can't argue with numbers protein wise, and FF has the best ratios. Cello has lost weight on it even, loves to eat it and he looks great. I have to supplement with some omega's because he did get a but of dandruff, but even that is gone. Baxters numbers aren't scary at least, so maybe grab some fancy feast and give him a 72 hour OTJ trial or try micro-dosing.

Also with microdosing, you don't have to wait for the 12/12 schedule. Just shoot as needed.

I will post in PZI form.
He acts fine I don't think he has a infection.

Well its a new day with new #'s. Baxter's numbers just keep rising. I feel horrible because the vet said no insulin til the 300's. I am sure by tomorrow I will be giving him .50 PZI. In the mean time he is back at his water dish drinking alot of water & going to his liter box.
I know this CAN NOT be good on his body!! I think I am shotting at dinner time 7:30pm I know he will be higher in a couple of hours.
I had family in town all day so I havent made it to the pet store to get different food. He has been eating Natures Vairety 48 hrs. I think the lamb I am feeding is probably high in fat. Its so hard to find a food with that balance of protein/carbs/fat.
Why can't a company just make diabetic cat food? Is it really that complicated? angry(2)_cat
