So....Francis has been OTJ for over two weeks but his numbers are blue. You can take a look at his SS if you are interested. So last night mom decides to give him a drop of insulin when he was 130 at PMPS. By +3 he was 44 and she called me to tell me. What a weird situation to be in, huh? She can't give him insulin it seems! She thought she'd try once a day...but nope!

Re: Update - Mom's cat Francis, hypo

Oh my goodness Traci - can you explain to your mom - that 130 is an ok number and not an insulin needing number especially for an OTJ cat.

And when did she do this test, just after eating?

Here is something that may help her to better understand what's a good range for a cat:

Can you tell her to put the syringes and insulin away and not to use it?

Re: Update - Mom's cat Francis, hypo

HELP me! I think I messed up my mom this time!!! I thought in order to get an OTJ trial that the cat had to be below 100 for a week - so my logic was that if he was in the blues without insulin that wasn't good enough - I thought the goal was green. I guess I still don't know everything.  Francis seems to be doing well, his numbers are generally blue and some green. It was my understanding that these numbers were too high, no??? HELP!

ETA- she only feeds lcw.
She knows when to test him - BEFORE food always.

ETA #2 - Francis's spreadsheet is up to date - I've not gotten numbers from her yet over the phone for last night. Sorry.

ETA #3-Hilary I will read your article next! Thank you for that.

well, usually a kitty on trial - when they have a blue preshot test, you would feed and test in 3 - 4 hours - you will see the number coming down by then.

In my opinion, I dont think she should be giving a drop here and there, but rather use food to bring him down and no panic-ing and reaching for the juice.

Im hoping Libby or Jill will come by and give you some more insight, so Traci - dont stress ok? :-D

Did I read this right - that a cat who is OTJ can be from 100-180 every day and that's fine????

I really hope that's correct because I just called my mother to tell her and we're both psyched. Francis is doing great if that's the case. I clearly misunderstood something along the way.

Will you be back later tonight to check in for replies about Francis?
I'll let Libby and Jill know ok?

In the meantime, hypo crisis is over, can u refresh your subject line so we dont all worry nailbite_smile about Francis and your ma?

can you update Francis' spreadsheet when you have a chance?

We want OTJ kitties to run under about 120 most of the time, but some do wobble around in higher numbers for a while. 180 is a bit high, but in general we look for trends.

Please give your mother the following instructions: If Francis is over 120, she should feed a small meal and test again in about 3 hours to see if Francis is able to bring down his number with food (meaning that his pancreas is working). DON'T give insulin without posting for advice first.

If he consistently is not able to bring himself down, then we might need to look for a Plan B for him, but if he's bringing himself down then most likely we can just wait. I think he probably *is* bringing himself down, because on the days she did do another test he was quite a bit lower.

It looks like Francis would benefit from more frequent, smaller meals while is pancreas is finishing healing. Having a snack about 3 hours before that AMBG and PMBG reading would probably make the readings lower.

Hi Libby-

OK!!! I have the SS updated for Francis! I read the info you gave me to her twice. She gets it!!! Whew! Thank you for helping us.

PS - in case you look at her SS - she needed to go to bed so she fed him some hcw. Ronnie- it was only this one time - she normally doesn't do that.
