Hello,
Long time no post for me and Maki. We hope all your furbabies are doing well. :bighug:
Just giving an update since many of you care intently for Maki during our hypo and as we tapered.

First thank you so much for saving our kitty. Without y'all, I am pretty sure she would not have made it. You whipped me into a testing, food selecting, and insulin administering machine over 2 months. We will still test but only a few times a week. Generally Maki's sugars are 70-110. We only administer lantus once a week or less. Rarely is she higher than 105. So is that ok? Ok that I haven't pushed to get consistenly below 80? Any damage I am doing with the infrequent testing and insulin? I have tried reading but not finding much on sporadic testing and dosing.

Maki was getting really adverse to daily testing and it seemed prudent to cut her a break, but I can't help wonder if I am not doing the best for her.
Much kitty love,
Patricia

I don't remember how to include her spreadsheet. :banghead:

Hi Patricia!

Long time! It's good to hear from you and great that Maki is in normal numbers!
Hope you are keeping well too?

I don't think giving Lantus once a week makes any difference to her numbers! How much are you giving her?

Your spreadsheet is linked in your signature but I don't see any data on it after 4/12.

Hope all of you have settled into your new place. Was it Florida that you moved to?

Hi Bhooma,
I am doing ok. How's Bandit? Our dad passed beginning of June. Life is starting to take a more normal day-to-day schedule. I am still working part-time. Now preparing for major surgery in November. The surgeon believes he can lower my pain, fainting, fatigue, vomiting, etc significantly. So giving it a try. Our mom is going to care for Maki while we are in Boston for surgery.

I stopped entering data when our dad declined and Maki's number became more consistent. I give her a 'sliver' of insulin. As described in the lantus instruction posts. Just a bit of light shines between the stopper and end of syringe. SO maybe .125 ish??? Very little and it hasn't dropped her numbers much post administration. Maki just seems to be in the 70-110 range as long as week keep feeding FF pate and the rare treats and fish flakes. Is that a normal range? I was striving for 60s but not sure if that's necessary?

She is playing, likes watching all the new things now that we live in the woods in Pennsylvania. Slowly warming to my mother in law feeding her when we are away for a day. Just seems happy and doing her thing. Such a sweetie.

Sorry about your dad! If we don't connect before it, good luck and prayers for the surgery. It would be wonderful if it can address all of that!

I don't think you need to give Maki insulin - especially 0.125U once a week - I doubt it makes a difference. Will tag @tiffmaxee for confirmation.
70-110 is fine. I remember how challenging it was to test Maki. She sounds like she is healthy and happy! :bighug:

Thanks. Our dad is in a better place. Lived a good life and now mom is enjoying her hobbies so it is all good there. Yes, I am very hopeful for November surgery. All prayers are so welcome and appreciated. Thank you.

Discontinuing the random small insulin doses. Thanks. I still have a 3/4 bottle of Lantus now. Is it safe to give that away to another fur parent? Or too old? (dated January 2021 as dispensed) Would like to help out another kitty but not risk it if the insulin is too old.

Hi Patricia. So glad to hear from you. It appears Maki is OTJ! Just continue spit checks like you are. If you see her over 120 I would try and test 3 or 4 hours after eating to see if the BG comes down. An odd blue us no cause for concern.
My condolences on the loss of your dad. I hope the surgery works for you. Let us know, ok?:bighug:

Elise and Bhooma,
Thank you for the updates. Will dispose of the insulin. Yippee OTJ for Maki Kitty!!!
Since I learned of this site I have sent a few other people here that were struggling with their kitties. I guess there should be a kitty owners training when first getting a kitty. All the things not to feed, what to do if hypo, etc. You folks mean so much to us.
TY:bighug:

If you ask me, there should be a vets' training - not to recommend prescription food and vetsulin, try a diet change first if no ketones, home test etc etc.

Take care and good luck again for your surgery! Let us know how it goes.
