Hello everyone,
Since my Jake crossed in July 2010, I have not been visiting this site very often :(

The rescue group I volunteer for recently had a cat returned to us because she was recently diagnosed as diabetic. We really need help and this is the first place I thought to try. The cat's owner is a cognitively impaired young lady who cannot drive or work and obviously cannot give insulin or take the cat to the required vet appointments. This poor girl loved Angel and is devastated. Unfortunately, no one in the rescue has space to take in another cat, especially one with a chronic medical condition. I am the only one familiar with diabetes as I had a diabetic cat for 8 years. However, I recently took in 4 foster cats, one of whom has a chronic medical problem, and along with my resident cats, I have absolutely no space for another one. It is devastating for me because our options are really limited.
What I am looking for here is any advice about rescues that might be able to help with Angel. I am located in Michigan but willing to drive Angel to a new placement.
Angel was recently diagnosed (last week) and I was out of town until yesterday. I am not familiar with what has been done for her so far. I doubt she is receiving any insulin. She is grossly overweight because her young owner meant well, but really overfed her. She is DSH, white, female about 10 years old and declawed by a previous owner. She is extremely sweet and loving. She is currently eating dry DM.
Any advice anyone has about a rescue group or anyone who might be able to take Angel would be very appreciated.

Not sure how to post photos but here is a link to my gallery for photos of Angel: http://felinediabetes.com/gallery3/inde ... ia-Jake-GA

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

May I suggest that while looking to rehome this kitty that the owner change food to canned. Eating a canned food diet has helped Sillci shed 7 pounds this past year and dropped her need for insulin. I also adopted a diabetic in Jan. We asked the rescue organization to feed only wet food while we awaited a transport to get him here. They did and he went from the 400's to 94 on the day of transport. Possibly the change in food with some weight loss is all that's necessary. Just my opinion.

Agree with Dale. Many of my own rescues went off insulin on diet change alone, my most recent Ebony is almost ready to be declared OTJ.

I know the owner is impaired, but we might be able to talk to her about food and if we can supply her with a start up supply of canned only food maybe she could keep her Angel and not be devistated over this.

ETA: I should have asked is Angel at the rescue now and if so would the rescue return Angel to the previous owner? If Angel is at the rescue, do they have someone who we could help with hometesting? Maybe getting supplies to them and teaching them to manage the FD. She is a beautiful girl.

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

The owner will not feed the cat wet food because she cannot stand the smell. Members of the rescue have repeatedly talked to her about the importance feeding Angel wet food, especially after the cat gained so much weight. It is no use. She is very stubborn and does not listen to any advice. The cat is still with the owner for a short time and there is no way she can give injections or home test.

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

Does the rescue have someone who can foster if we help with insulin and education? Is this cat still with the owner, it sounded like she was returned to the rescue, but it also sounds like she may still be with the owner.

I think if someone fosters for a short time, switches to canned, get this kitty vetted, she could probably quickly become an OTJ kitty and go into the regular adoption program as long as new adopters know about her hopefully transient FD.

Are you familiar with Diabetic Cats in Need (DCIN)? http://fdmb-cin.blogspot.com/

DCIN could help this rescue in that we could courtesy post the kitty on the blog, facebook page and elsewhere.

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

No there is no one in the rescue who can foster the cat. The cat is still with the owner but I'm not sure how much longer. Thank you for the information about the Diabetic Cats in Need.

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

Hi Lydia. The way I read your message, you want to find another rescue or an individual to take Angel. She is beautiful.

You need to get the cat away from the cognitively-impaired "owner"into the hands of someone who can appropriately treat her diabetes. Some diabetic cats can manage very well without treatment, for awhile.

I don't know people in rescue in Michigan, but maybe some of us can search for rescues in SW Michigan that can help you. Volunteers?

Another idea would be for you to find another place in the rescue to place your healthy foster so that you can take Angel. DCIN would be happy to help you with testing supplies and with insulin.

Lydia, what town in MI?
I was waiting, hoping, and praying for you to arrive the second I read MI, dearest Hope...

Still holding my breath...

Much love and countless hopeful hugs for Angel,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, watching over us all...

Re: Rescued diabetic cat needs help asap

Not sure how helpful this is but there is a rescue sanctuary in utah -Best Friend's Animal Sanctuary. They take many cats that have chronic illnesses-look at their website it is quite moving! I know it is a far drive but it is an option. A know some other rescue groups will do trades as well (i.e. they will take a cat that has medical needs or is considered "unadoptable" if you take 3 "adoptable" cats from them etc. Hope everything works out!
