When BF and I first wondered whether Tommy was diabetic I went into panic mode not just because the thought of him being ill, but because he HATES VISITING THE VET (sorry don't mean to shout) and I knew that we would have to go often to have him seen and tested. I also was very fearful of the home testing and giving him the injections and how he would react. So far with the glucose testing he has been fine and tomorrow we will start on Lantus and I also believe he and I will be OK.

Well to make a long story short, my Tommy was hell on wheels today at the vet. He nearly busted the door to his pet carrier and scratched his vet. He is a very large and strong boy! He was so angry and generally nasty that I really didn't get a chance to even give him a test shot. The vet showed us twice and left it at that because there was just no way for us to do more. I'll be watching youtube videos tonight on how to give the injections.

Of course, we are now home and by looking at him you would never know that he wanted to shred the vet and everyone there to pieces. He is back to being the sweet affectionate boy we know.

I am praying this gets better....Mimi

I know what you mean about being a nasty unit at the vet. My Civvie Slappy completely turns her 5.5lb self into this 'thing' that takes 2 techs and the vet to handle her????? One ugly ugly girl, and trust me, she could eat everyone of those 'vetbeans' alive.. :o

My sugar Bean is not that bad thank gosh, but after our dx in 4/11 and her one and only curve one week later, I found this site, and she has not had to go back to the vet since. Food change, home testing and micro dosing - all learned from HERE, not only saved her life but now she is OTJ! This place is just wonderful to help all of our furry felines!

Welcome and I promise it will get better. I found that after I tested Bean (with lo carb treats), I would feed a bit and make sure it stayed down, then feed the rest. She would be eating and I would be shooting....that easy and that quick (after momma quit feeling like I was going to pass out)! lol

You are the bomb for home testing and shooting insulin to help Mr. Tomtom!

Keep us posted, ask for any kind of help you might need. This is the best place for you to find! Furry paws coming your way!

Once you get the hang of home testing, you won't need to make many vet visits. I do all my curves at home and email them to my vet; they're more accurate done at home anyway because stress can affect blood glucose levels. I use the Rand/Roomp protocol to adjust dose and just make note of that when I send the info to my vet, so she really doesn't need to see him very often at all. Mikey hates the vet too, and my vet agrees that the less I have to take him in, the better.

My Calli (GA) civie was like that. She was so bad that in order to get a good exam she would have to be anesthesized before I found the cat specialist vet. Everyone was afraid of her and she knew she could terrorize them so she did. Thankfully, she was hardly ever sick and usually only went in for shots.

Racci hates going to the vet but always behaves luckily since she's always sick between asthma and diabetes and anal glands getting blocked and infected, poor baby. She just complains the entire way there. She's so stressed out when she gets there that any tests taken are useless so the vet is always happy to see a spreadsheet even though in the beginning she was against home testing. Now she just wants to do a fructosamine every 6 months or so unless Racci needs to see her.

My civvie Nipper goes from "I love everyone! Please pet me!" to DEMON HELL CAT at the vet. She's all black and quite scary looking when she's mad, spitting and growling and hissing. She's very strong and wily and almost impossible to wrangle. I usually end up holding her down so the vet can examine her because she calms down a tiny bit when it's me holding her. My vet actually commented when she diagnosed Scout's diabetes, "I'm glad we're not going through this with your black cat." Scout is very good at the vet, she doesn't fight or cause trouble. The only problem is when she gets tipped off that there might be trouble afoot, she hides in the boxspring of my bed where she is impossible to get to, thus avoiding the vet trip altogether. I have learned to corral Scout first, then get the carriers out second. :)

My Ru has earned a reputation at the vet for peeing on everyone. The last time she was there, she spent the day to do a curve and test to make sure her bladder infection was gone. They kept her in a separate room all day, with a litter box so they could test her urine. Of course, she refused to go. For the entire day. We came to pick her up in the evening and when they scooped her up to put her in the crate, she let loose all over the place. I bet she was giggling in her own way.

How have the attempts at home gone? Can you do it or does he now associate it with the nasty vet and gets angry with you?

I don't think Tom associates the testing with the vet yet and pray that it never happens. But he definitely does put on a show every time we go. We were told last night that for his next visit, he will have to go early and get sedated again. There is no other way because he was hard to handle with 2 techs, the vet, boyfriend and me. ohmygod_smile
