Unexplained aggression towards cat sitter

I haven't posted in a while. Sebastian's been doing fine-- no problems for the past year or so ever since he had his dental.

We just got home from a long weekend, and our cat sitter (the one we've been using for the past few years) reported that she was unable to give him his shot this morning because he was unusually aggressive, hissing and swiping at her.

Now, Sebastian is the most teddy-bearish, laidback, mellow, sweetest cat EVER (except for at the vet). Hissing and being mad is highly out of character for him. It's been about three years since his diagnosis, and he's never been upset about shots. He always comes up and just sits patiently, waiting for it. So we immediately tested him, and he was at 266 when we got home, which was about +19 since his shot last night. That's an okay number, really, with the missed shot. He's been acting fine, too. Playing, talking, acting sweet.

I'm concerned about what happened with the sitter, though. But HOW concerned should I be? Is a trip to the vet in order? Or should we just watch him for a few days?

Has this ever happened to anyone else?
 
KT is very laid back, calm, lays for testing, all those things you described too BUT, every few months, he suddenly scratches, bites, attacking my hand and arm - not even associated with FD or testing. I've had him grab my leg as I'm walking away. I don't know what happens at those times, I've spent a lot of time trying to pinpoint 'why' but usually don't. Maybe this was something like this???

Maybe he just had an off day... happens to the best of us where nothing makes us happy and everything ticks us off :smile: I'd keep an eye on him, and if you notice anything unusual then you can have him checked out. Otherwise, I might have the sitter come over again and see what his reaction is.

Thank you both for the responses. We have a civvie who is an absolute terror-- sweet as pie one minute and mean as nails the next (she's a tortie-- apparently comes with the territory!) I would expect this behavior from her but I don't think I've ever heard Sebastian hiss in the 10 years I've had him.

The cat sitter asked if she could come by this week and see how he reacts to her. I think that's a good idea. I guess I'll see what happens!
 
If your cat sitter also sits for other kitties besides yours, it's possible that the scent from someone else's cat upset him. My first sitter since Gabby was diabetic was one of the vet techs from my vet's office. Gabby associated her smelling of lots of other cats with the vet and was (ahem...) "challenging" for her to shoot. Testing was completely out of the question. You might see if having your sitter come to your place first helps. You could also plug in some Feliway diffusers and see if that helps.

Foreign smells coming into the house on the pet sitter, who may have other clients.

Maybe the pet sitter should get one of your worn T-shirts to wipe herself down, LOL!
